Default odometer question

Hope this is in the right forum, I was going to post it in tech but it said engine only

Im looking to install a HUD in my 98, and that would involve a custer swap. If the new cluster has a differnt odometer reading - is there any way to sync the new cluster with my computer so my mileage would be correct? id hate to get a cluster that says 90k miles when my vette really only has 28k

Since the odometer is a digital read out and not a rolling clock, I think the mileage would be kept in the car's computer. Of course I'm just assuming. But I've read lots of posts of people doing this with no problems, so I don't think you will.

To begin with----the mileage is stored in the large green printed circuit board located in the instrument cluster. The PCM or any other computer does NOT store mileage.

All you have to do is: Take the instrument cluster to a speedo shop that can change the mileage on the cluster odometer. Tell them what you want the new mileage set to and you're good to go. They should have you sign some State Odometer Form stating what you are changing the odometer to.

This is exactly what I did when I installed a HUD in my 1998 Coupe. I had a 2000 IC w/ 47312 miles which was changed to 17000 miles (the current mileage of my '98). It works great--absolutely no problem at all. The shop that changed my IC took 30 minutes and charged me $80. Good luck.

No---you cannot reset your odometer yourself. Special equipment is required.

Here is the info on the shop that reset my odometer. Give them a call.

AJR International
951 N. Larch
Elmhurst, IL 60126
800-232-3965 630-832-0222

This is a 50+ year old Chicagoland speedometer/radio shop. They've been around a long time and do good work. AJR charged me $80.00 plus $5.60 IL state tax. Good luck.....
