I drove a corvette for the first time this past weekend. I fell in love and need one! It was a 1999 with 58,000 miles on the clock but very clean interior. I'm a little hesitant about buying a sports car with 58K on it. How long do you think these cars will last. If the engine has been given synthetic all along the enging should be fine for 200K mile, right? What about the car as a whole?
I know I should buy as new as I can afford, but there has to be a tradeoff with the mileage to get into my $20k price range. The car doesn't look modded or rode hard (I think).
This will be a second car for me and plan to put about 10,000 miles per year on it.
I think you should be able to get 500k out of todays engines without a rebuild. Of course everything around it will need replacing long before the engine. I saw a LS-1 broken down after 200k and it showed vertually no wear. Synthetic oil rocks. And this winter I will be changing all fluids to synthetic. Good luck with the buy. Have a good mechanic check it out first.
I bought my EB 2002 coupe with almost 74k on the clock. It shows the wear and tear of a 3 year old car with almost 25k a year on it. The engine is solid and the interior is good minus some vinyl repair on the drivers seat The most important thing is I love the car and have a blast driving it!
Have someone you trust look at it and go for it if you can make it happen.

Dave Hill sat shotgun while my buddy, Tandy Dillen (see avatar) drove a C4 body with an LS1 engine and MN6 (test/stealth vehicle built by Dave to test the motor and tranny only)
Tandy was babying it through the proving grounds during a special "Vette Owners" day set up by GM, if you had the connections. The LS1 was a total suprise to all.
Dave told Tandy that if he didn't get on the thing he would loose his turn.
"We don't think you can break it", said Dave
Tandy tried to break it, but failed
See sig under "Depreciation Mods". I'll do that many, many more times before I EVER have any concerns.
I bought my 98 w/58000 in July - on it I put about 500.00 in repair and it runs good. I put Mobil 1 in it and I now have about 60000 on it - so far no problems -
I am looking on the web for an extended warranty to cover the next few years.
Take a look at it 1st = get a company to inspect it to see what needs to be done.
Good luck......and welcome aboard
I haven't seen him post lately, but one member on here has a 99 C5 with over 320k on it! He uses the car as his work vehicle, driving around Michigan in some sort of sales position.

I have 58K on my '99, and everyone asks me if it's an '04. only minor problems throughout my ownership, and no problems in a long time....knock on wood.

There are at least a couple of members here who have more than 100K on their C5's. The engine is pretty reliable. Other components of the car may have their problems though. I am taking my car in tonight for another leak in the rear end - this time it may be the tranny. Makes four times for the leaks. But, I still love the car.
