Default Stupid question here....

But what are the difference between an "X" pipe and a "H" pipe? Is it all sound, or are there HP gains ect?

Not a stupid Q -

While I was at Andy's shop, I asked him the same question and he told me, on a stock exhaust, there's little to no effect. The X is supposed to reduce cabin resonance on the louder exhaust systems.

I still have my stock exhaust, so unless there is a benefit worth changing to an X, I'll keep my H.

an X pipe smooths out the exhaust "pulses" and delivers smoother flow resulting in less resonance...the crossover opening is much larger than the stock H pipe which on mine was no bigger around than a nickle!!

The H-pipe has been designed into most factory duel exhaust systems to balance the left bank right bank exhaust pulse scaveging.,.. and equalizes back pressure. The H pipe design is a poor flow manager, but it's a cheap manufacturing application.. The X pipe on the other hand does a much more effecient job of balancing the exhaust pulses and will give better scavenging and reduce decell popping.. and add some ponies...because of better exhaust exit.

Let's expand the questioning a bit...
I have a Borla Cat-back (Stinger w/duals) and kept the OEM H-pipe. I don't mind the popping, in fact I kind of like it, but I have been told by a "certified" GM Tech that it causes damage to the exhaust valves. Given that it may add some power, I'm now questioning swapping the H for an X. Is the H-pipe bolted in at both ends (I know that it is bolted aft because I bolted my Borlas to it, but is it also bolted at the forward end? Or is it welded in? (It's easier to ask you guys than to jack up the car and crawl under it.)

Default H-pipe bolted

I put on the Bassini X-pipe with the Borla after cat exhaust and the H-pipe is bolted in, while the pipe was disconnected i installed the heatmaxx shield in the tunnel, and that was worth every penny as the console was a lot cooler and then bolted in the X-pipe.
