I would like to rig a cb in my C5 for road trips. The only challenge I have come across is how to mount the antenna. Now today I looked at a ZR1 a guy has here in Vegas that has used a magnetic mount on the rear hatch. He said it was held by cement of some sort, I really don't want to mount something permenant with cement though. I am looking for a cigarette lighter power cb. Any other ideas??
I attended a get together of the Utah Corvette Club a couple weekends back, was my first time. Around 90 vettes showed up for the cruise and was great to meet many other drivers. Anyway, there were alot of them that had CB's on their cars. All C5's had the antenae attached the same way, a metal bar stuck out of the back between the bottom 'vents' on either side of the exhaust. Someone can chime in I'm sure with more details, but it didn't touch the body at all and looked like a great place to have it.
Installed one on my 75 vette back in 79. Believe it used a suction cup setup. Make sure it's a zero plane antenna and follow the instructions for adjustment.
My CB is permanently mounted on the passenger side of the center console. The rear antenna mount is from Eckler's. We use our CB quite often during club drivouts.
A lot of folks in the Corvette Club of Texas mount the antenna on a short (6 inch or so) piece of metal connected to the bolts on the horizontal piece just above the license plate in back. Seems to work OK, I'm not sure how they route the wires though as I haven't done it yet myself.

That is exactly the idea I was looking for, it looks great. How is it mounted underneath? Is it actually secured by some existing bolts??
How far out are you getting with that set up?
Thanks!!!!
I have mine mounted above the license plate. I have a Cobra 75 WXST, with everything in the mic so there is only one tiny box below the passenger seat.

There are alos adapters to use you regular car antenna. It just T's into to antenna cable behind the radio and has a control to balance the signal. Use to sell these when I was in the electronics business. Maybe you can find it @ Radio Crap uhh Shack

installed those many years ago.. Worked fine on receive, not so well on transmit. Shouldn't matter though, since car caravans rarely get 1/2 mile apart.
You can go to Radio Shack, or on EBAY and buy a hand held CB. Thats what I use on trips. Uses either batteries or plugs into the Cig lighter plug and has its own antenna....(vetts just look funky with a nasty CB antenna sticking up...IMHO)....
I've never checked the range, but I've never had a problem
I was looking at my license frame area and it doesn't seem like it could mount above the license plate, it seems too flimsy. Is it actually mounted to the holes used to mount the license plate itself??? Thanks in advance.

I had the place where I bought it do the install. There is a solid bracket coming up from the license plate area, making a 90 degree bend and going under the rear fascia above the license. The CB mount is then bolted to this bracket. It is very sturdy and may be removed, however I leave mine in all the time.
I've cruised at 125 MPH for over an hour with a couple of times cruising at 147 MPH for about 5 minutes at a time (I wanted to see how fast it would go in 6th). The bracket was fine, and let me tell you, that antenna was really bent back when I was at speed. When I stopped for the evening, the antenna was just like normal.
