Actually the stock alarms from GM are complete crap and very easily defeated using two common items. 1 ice pick and 1 coat hanger. Take the icepick and punch just below the door lock. Then stick the coathanger in there and turn the lock. It unlocks the door and the alarm thinks the key was used and is disarmed. Several Forum members have had their wheels stolen in this manner or the entire car.
Get an aftermarket alarm. Having known about this weakness I installed one the weekend I got back from picking the car up in 1998.
Now before anyone gets their panties in a wad about my telling how easy it is to break into a Vette. This ain't new news to any thief out there!
Completely right...another GM engineering screw up. During last years GA-Auburn game some birth defects broke into our suburban using that method. They stole my gun and my wifes purse. Worst thing is she was using a smaller purse to tote into the game so we didn't realize what had happened until the credit card people called several days after it happened. You can hardly tell anyone has broken into the vehicle unless they ransack the thing.
Well, my son got his stereo back. I had to go to New Orleans today, so didn't get to go see if they have the key. I will find out tomorrow. No personal info on the thieves yet. Have some friends in the State Police. I will see what I can find out without being to obvious. Looks like it may soon be time for a midnight ride.
BTW - When I mentioned to the reporting officer that I was worried that they might come back for the wheels, he said they wouldn't be going anywhere for a long time.
My son, who saw the loot when he picked up his head unit, said there was a 7' table stacked 2' high with the loot, and about 5 or 6 subwoofer boxes on the floor. I can't believe they got all of that stuff in a suburban.
There were three of them. The neighbor, who witnessed everything, called it in, and reported their movement to the police, said they would drop off two guys, the third would circle the block, and then pick up the other two with the loot. I asked her why she didn't call me. I keep the Remington 1200 loaded with #8 birdshot. With a 30" barrel and full choke, I can throw a 12" pattern at 100'.
Thanks for all the well-wishing. Looks like things will turn out OK this time.
UPDATE: After reading the above posts, I checked closely, and there is a scratch on the driver's window right above the door handle. Looks like they used a slim jim.

I believe you can unlock the door with the key without seting off the alarm. Slim jim grabs the locking mechanism and simulate a key unlock. Therefore, no alarm. I am considering opening up the door panels and removing the switch from the locking mechanism. Only concern is if the fob goes south, using the key will set off the alarm.
Glad they caught um, but they were probably out in a matter of hours. At least they didn't tear anything up on you car. Same thing happened to me about 3 years ago. Got all my cd's, owners manual and wheel key.
Believe me,I know how you feel.About 6 months, 2 young hoodlums rode their bikes down the street and broke all the windows in my Vette. They also broke the windows in 6 more cars when they returned.Unfortunately for them,or fortunately for them they were apprehended be fore I could track them down.I would give a months pay for 5 minutes with them.Damn,I hope they are over 18 yrs. of age so they can vacation at the grey bar hotel.
