Was awakened by the police this morning at 5:30 AM. Seems a group of thieves went through the neighborhood and broke into about a dozen cars. Fortunately, they were caught. They got the head unit from my son's 99 Camaro, but didn't touch the amps. Only thing they took from the Vette was the lug nut key. Knew exactly where to look. Somehow they defeated the alarms on both cars.
I'm guessing someone who works at a Chevy deakership to be able to get into both cars without the alarms going off. Going to look at the evidence later this AM.
Worst thing: my two watchdogs, who usually bark at anything that moves, didn't make a sound. Guess I'll have to fire them.
My neighbor across the street saw the whole thing and called the cops. They caught them in another part of the subdivision.
Boy, would my son and I like to have a few minutes alone with them.

Sorry for your trouble Why can't people just leave stuff alone?
A word of caution...if they got your wheel key, they may be planning a return trip after the dust settles for the wheels. Nothing worse than waking up to your car on blocks and no wheels
Never been burgularized, but while living in an apartment in 1971 my GTO was broken into and they stole a cassette deck I bought in Japan(in 1971 there probably wasn't 10 cars with cassette decks in the USA, so I doubt they knew what it was they stole); the very next night they came back and ripped out the speakers from the back deck.
For at least 5 years after I dreamed about burgulars.
My current house is on about 7 acres and the local utility provides large security lights & poles for about $7 a month each, I have four, each about 150 from each corner of the house. The place looks like a shopping center at night, but we have the only house I know of in the county that's never been burgularized, and People magazine not too long ago labeled our county the meth lab capital of the world (a meth user will steal anything from anybody). As for the daytime, we always have at least two vehicles parked outside (5 vehicles for 2 people) and the neighbor has a big, mean looking dog (really gentle) that is smart enough to know what vehicles belong at the house and when a strange vehicle pulls into the drive, he is standing at their drivers door by the time they stop - most people won't leave their car. For those who have coyotes in their area, this dog chases coyotes who will eat most dogs, so you know he is pretty intimidating.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least the people (being nice here) were caught. Hope you are able to get the lug nut key back soon and your son's property.
Let the courts cut off their hands and let justice be served. Ooopss, wrong country. Little bastards. I hate to bring it up but just curious. Any statistics on the crooks like how many were there and their ages (Maybe you should PM me on this topic?) I am so sick of the crap heads like this. I am sorry to hear about your cars but so they caught the jerks. I would make sure to take a day off for that court date. Good luck.
Sorry to hear about the theft. But they were caught and no real damage done. I think I'd find another location for that key. Let us know more. We can all learn from experiences like this.

Thats kind of weird that they would take the lug nut key. They obviously knew you need that to get the wheels off, so I'm sure they were planning a return trip. Damn good thing they got caught. Make sure you bring that up to the cops, and get that thing back. Good luck with it.

Actually the stock alarms from GM are complete crap and very easily defeated using two common items. 1 ice pick and 1 coat hanger. Take the icepick and punch just below the door lock. Then stick the coathanger in there and turn the lock. It unlocks the door and the alarm thinks the key was used and is disarmed. Several Forum members have had their wheels stolen in this manner or the entire car.
Get an aftermarket alarm. Having known about this weakness I installed one the weekend I got back from picking the car up in 1998.
Now before anyone gets their panties in a wad about my telling how easy it is to break into a Vette. This ain't new news to any thief out there!
That sucks, I know the feeling. Five years ago I left my Blazer door unlocked at night in my driveway and the next morning all my change, cd's, $100 folding knife, MAG light & expensive sunglasses were missing. I called the cops & they said it was probably a homeless person or kids. I wasn't the only one in my neighborhood that got hit & they never caught anyone. I drove around for the next three months looking for a bum wearing $150 Ray-Bans! I hope these punks get the maximum penality / fine.
Sorry for your losses. The frustrating fact is that if they're minors they'll probably get off with a "hand slap". They'll be released to their parents who probably aren't very involved in their upbringing anyway or they wouldn't be out roaming the streets ripping off other peoples property!
