Bought my trickle charger. One question. It says that I should connect the ground cable to the frame. Where is the best place to connect it that's close to the battery?
What's up caffeine in 99? I put a post on here earlier today about battery tenders. I was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to ground one of the clips to the frame or elsewhere. Everyone seems to be of the opinion you don't have to ground one of the clips. Just hook the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative. You can do it the other way though. Check out my post on battery tenders. Good luck. I intend to hook p to p and n to n. DAn
Geez, lighten up on the latte's! I'll third party in all the prior posters and then we will really mix it up a bit I guess you will assume the risk whatever you do. Res Ipsa! Dan
I think these instructions are moreso for a liability issue for the charger manufacturer. The reasoning behind this is, when you clip the leads to the battery, as soon as you clip the negative, there could be a spark, and could rarely but possibly cause a battery explosion. The chances of this are quite slim, and if you connect the charger leads without the charger plugged in, a spark likely won't happen at all. Plugging the charger into the wall should be your final connection.
By grounding to the frame, or engine, this possible spark would be away from the battery and would likely do no harm, unless of course it occured next to a leaky fuel line or connection.
If you're really afraid of a battery spark, I'd suggest clipping the negative lead to the alternator casing, or a clean exposed bolt on the engine block. It will be a good ground, and far away from anything flammable or explosive. You'll also find a frame connection up near the hood hinges...one of those bolt heads should work as well.
