RE:Speaker Size

The speaker choices are slim if you do not wish to mod your doors to accept different speakers.
If you remove the Bose/Delco head unit, the Bose subs in the doors stop working - so consider carefully if you wish to change your entire system or just change the front tweeters for a decent pair of mid/high speakers and swap the mids in the rear - or if you are going to go hog wild and change everything.
I opted to dump the entire system and went kinda crazy - but that's my personal sonic choice.
I installed 3 1/2 inch Alpines mid/tweeters and Rockford Fosgate 8 inch subs in the doors (custom enclosures), RF 6 3/4 inch mids and RF tweeters in the rear and a 12 inch RF sub in a semi-custom enclosure in the "wheel well" in the rear. Topped off with a couple of amps, reams of wire, some crossovers, a cap, Sony MP3 head unit and 10disc MP3 changer and I was good to go.
But there is no need to be so extreme - the Bose system comes to life (kinda) with just a speaker swap (front tweeters and rear mids).
Your mileage may vary. My .02 cents.
