Default Help with new (wierd) noises =(

I've got two new noises commnig from my drive-train. One has been kind of on-going and the other is far more pronounced since my trip to the drags this past weekend.

1. I have a sort of clunk from the rightish rear end.

- It seems to happen right in the morning when I'm driving down my street. Also, it happens when I shift the weight of the care sometimes... i.e. when I apply the brakes. The problem is that it's so intermitent that it's hard to diagnose.

Is "the clunk" a common problem that people have like column lock etc?

2. Since my escapades at the drags last weekend (on street tires) there's an increase in what sounds like a gear whine from the rear end.

- I fully understand how noisy the drive-trains of these cars are esp. with the lack of sound deadening insulation, but the change in noise is what bugs me.

The noise only happens when the car is under slight load, heavy load the exhaust is too loud, and when I let off the gas the noise stops. It gets louder the faster I seem to go.

** I can't fully tell if it's the rear or the clutch b/c the noise just comes from the "drivetrain" in general. The car is under warranty so I may just beat on it until the noise gets bad then take her in.

Any ideas would be great

The clunk sound seems similar to what many have posted about a plate that sits behind the seats under the rear area carpeting. If the seats are up against them I think you get the clunking some say. It also sounded to me like that noise may also be somewhat temperature dependent, so when colder it may become more prevalent. I dont think that is anything to be worried about if indeed thats the noise/cause.

As far as your other noise goes, dont have much an idea on that one other than it sounds like something you should get checked out. Perhaps you have some rear end issue going on there.

Yeah, the first noise is something many people have experienced. The consensus is the sheet metal behind the passenger seat. If you go there right now and bring the seat back forward and press behind where the seat was I'm sure you find some flex in the sheet metal and probably sounds like what you've been hearing. I only experince it in the morning as well and only when the gas tank is below 3/4 full. When the tank is above that or at full, no clunk. I just take it as one of those inherent noises to the Z.

The second noise I have no idea.

As for the first sound, if it sounds like a tennis ball hitting the right rear quarter panel, many folks--including myself--have noticed it under the exact same conditions that you describe. Seems pretty normal.

As for the second sound, my drive train has become progressively noisy over time, especially at the low end, just as you describe. It got so noticeable that I took mine into my local Corvette specialist just last week. He said it's normal. Nothing to worry about.

Good luck.

That cluck or thump on the right rear appears to be common. I also posted a thread on it recently. I get the thump when I first drive the car in the morning to work, within a mile from my house. I still don't know what can be done to fix it.

Even on street tires you can hurt the rear end - the second noise sounds like classic ring and pinion whine, get it on a lift and listen with a stethoscope (or long handle screw driver). My money is you have broken off a few teeth, time for new gears.

Been there, done that ....

Man you guys are great... I flipped the passenger seat forward and it's that dang piece of metal. I think sice I put my tunnel plate on and stiffened up the chassis the flimsy metal is making noise now.

Now the the whine... I'm really thinking it may be the clutch. My buddy has a 300Z TT making 400 rwhp and his throwout bearing is all messed up. His car makes the exact same noise as mine but louder. Last night it got louder and it's distinctly comming from the shifter frontal area.

The car's under warranty still

Uless the rear end whine is really loud you might give some thought on changing to your rear end gear oil to something more slippery like Royal Purple or Red Line. I see more and more guys that track their cars going with Royal Purple and swearing by it.

Default The dreaded "Clunk"

Well, I've got it too and glad to see I'm not the only one ... sorry. I dreaded having the dealer mess with my car to find it. I'm heading out to see if I can duplicate it now and if so, plan to ignore it. Thanks!

Hey Brian,

I'm not sure if we are experiencing the same noise, but I get a clunk in the right rear of the car when I go into a left turn. I finally figured out what it was...the right exhaust pipe is hitting up under the car as the car's momentum shifts upon a left turn. I discovered this while washing the car...I hit the right exhaust pipes as I was washing with my wash mit and was able to reproduce the sound. I think it might be a "slight" alignment issue with my exhaust and headers (we both have Kooks...not sure if this is relevant, but...). I would suggest you go out and try hitting with your hand the right exhaust pipes and see if they are coming in contact with the underside panel of the car. Can't hurt to try.

BTW, if that is the solution, you owe me pictures of you know who. And they better be "full frontal."
