Hey Guys,
Just hit my first of several more to come mid life crisis'ies, and decided I just need a Z06.
I'm currently looking at a Blue 02 with 28K miles. Seems to be in good shape and the guys is wanting $32500 for it. Ok price?
Immediately after a 10 minutes test drive, I popped the hood and pulled the dipstick. A fair amount of steam came outta the dipstick hole for about 15 seconds. Is this normal? I let it idle for a while and watched the temp gauges and everything seemed ok there. Also, after shutting it down, I got a little engine knock for about 1 second. Anything else to look for? The Goodyear F1 tires with decent tread on them were very slick. First through third gear was like driving on ice. Reminded me of race tires before getting scuffed in.
Carfax ran clean and all the #'s matched on doors/hoods etc.
If the car is in very good condition, the price is a fair one.
A little steam coming out of the dip stick tube is normal, especially if you just got done riding it pretty hard.
The engine knock sounds a bit weird. Could be some bad gas. I don't know.
The F1s have excellent dry weather traction, but relatively poor wet weather traction. But even if in dry conditions, you can expect to experience some traction problems with aggressive launches. It's hard to get all of that HP to the ground without feathering the clutch a bit. It takes some practice. However, tire slippage in third gear is not very common unless the car has had major HP mods done.
The blue 02 is a nice looking car. The mileage is pretty good and the price is good. But then again, you don't want to get stuck with a car that has a lot of hidden problems. I suggest that you try to find a Corvette specialty shop in your area and have an expert go thru it.
I don't think what you heard was engine knock, but rather the characteristic "chatter" upon shutting down the Z without having the clutch engaged. This is very typical.

If it was upon shutting off the engine, then I agree. Try shutting it down w/ the clutch depressed. If it doesn't do it again you're good. The tires, if worn, will get loose in 1st & 2nd easily, especially if you're in a colder climate (or if they're warn) Spinning in 3rd w/o mods or worn tires requires either a powershift or a quick shift @ a very high rpm... I feel the mileage is a little high for an 02, & I think the price is a little high as well. There are people getting 04's for $39,000 brand new! I'd keep looking.... JMHO Ron
Thanks for the input... good stuff from everyone.
I'm half tempted to go offer the dealer 45k for a new z16 since there's still about 6 of them in the DFW area right now. They said they'd do 46,500 over the phone but I'm thinking they can do better than that.
