Anyone have any experience with aftermarket short throw shifters?
Maybe I'm not used to it yet, but I'm having a little trouble consistantly finding third gear. I want a shifter that will not create any more noise than the factory one.
thanks
Do a search for shifters. Much has been talked about already. Many here prefer aftermarket shifters over the stock one. GM messed up on the shifter for the C5.
My stocker works great! I need to drive someone's Z who has an after market to see what all the hoopla is all about.
Hey Shylor, damn Napa plug kit you talked me into buying bailed me out the other day. "Nice Work"

Glad to help! I've been lucky so far and haven't had to use the plug kit yet. I also got one of those $50 (shipped) mercedes jacks C5 Federick has been selling on the forum. Very sweet little light weight jack, for when you have to lift the car a bit to get to the area on the tire to plug it. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=295586
Now I just need to find a light weight lug wrench, for those extreme times when the tire actually has to come off.

First of all I would practice shifting. Even with an after market shifter you will probably still have the problem. Remember the shifters are loaded so they go easily into third, without pressure being applied.
I do not understand why so many people have trouble putting the tranny into third. All it takes is a shove forward and it will automatically fall right into the gate. All the aftermarket shifters do is increase the centering force beyond what is required and then make it hard to get into low and second on down shifts or fifth on upshifts because the spring pressure is too high. Since the gates become so narrow it is difficult to tell which gate the shifter is in so when putting it into first or reverse you end up pushing sideways like hell to make sure you are in the proper gate.

This has not been my experience. I thought my stocker was fine until my first DE track event a couple of weeks ago. i drove BLKZ06's car with a Hurst, and she has the special soft springs you have to request from Hurst-apparently these don't come in the kit. Wow, what a difference. Short throws, extremely precise, including downshifts-very little resistance at all. It's very sweet and I'm going to get one.
If you just drive the street, the stocker is probably fine. When you track the car, it seems like miles between gears

I think they try to force the shift not realizing that the shifter will do the work for them. As I said practice shifting. Just let the shifter move by itself.
Well my experience with the stock shifter was that it felt sloppy and long. Sure my Hurst makes more noise but, I understood what performance parts do before I installed it. Now the Hurst rattle was big problem for me but, after installing an MGW Pistol Grip **** things were much better. I perfer the self centering properties of the Hurst over the stock shifter. I think it makes things much easier. Well except for reverse but, that is a small price to pay.
I can't imagine usig a pistol grip shifter. It just wouldn't seem natural. I like to let my hand ride on top of the shifter and use the fingers and heel of the hand to do the shifting.

And I can't imagine using a ball type shifter. When I rest my right arm on the console, it is more natural for my hand to hold a pistol grip type ****. Twisting my hand to hold a ball type **** is not natural with my arm at rest. I have never held a shifter by the top of the ****, I've always held it by the side.
When you arms are at your side are your palms facing your legs or to the rear of your body? They should be facing your legs, making a gripping type **** a more natural placement for your arm.
Im going to wait for the Mid america to start selling the C6 shorty. I know that it will be a direct fit and be compatiable with my 04 Z setup and give me the short throw I desire. I won't have all the problems other forum members have had with all aftermaket shifters. The C6 shifter looks awesome. Just my .02$ worth

i agree been using GM 6 spds for the last 7 yrs in camaros and vetts, i had a hurst in my SS was ok-but with camaros under hard accel the shifter would torque over and it was a pain to get into 3rd,since owning a Z for the last yr-i could'nt believe how much better the stock shifter was-IMO i think its fine for street..
