You can paint right over the letters if you feel like it then just sand the paint right off. The letters are raised enough to make this very easy to do.

The letters will actually look better after you sand them lightly than they did before you started the paint job.

You can put vasoline on the letters before you paint, and wipe it off afterwards.

I used a caliper painting kit from advanced auto. It came with a cleaner and ceramic based paint, I'm very satisfied with the results.
