I am helping a close friend fix a '99 coupe with a broken W/S. I had the shock of my life today when the local windshield shop told me the cost would be $875 for a HUD version and around $500 if it did not have HUD. Is there truly a big difference in the windshield??

Yes there is. I replaced mine about 2 years ago and got about the same quotes. There is a special film between the two layers of glass for the HUD reflection. But still, I wouldn't have it any other way. When I first got the HUD I thought I wouldn't use it. Now I cannot stand to drive a car without it.
quite a few guys here that have HUD have gotten the non-hud windshield. I dont have HUD, so I cant speak for them... but I have read that it isnt quite as sharp, but not bad.
I'll have to take the opposite side...there is not a big difference in the windshield. I added HUD to pace #2 and kept the non-HUD windshield. I COULD NOT TELL A DIFFERENCE between my HUD and the factory HUD of my friends...
I'm told the only time you can tell is if you're driving into a heavy sun situation...
I recently bought a used windshield from Forum member Karshop (Gene Coggins) for a lot less than your $500 quote and it was HUD enabled...you might contact him to see if he has another...
It would cost you a few $$ to put it in, but that's usually not too expensive...

Either way, those prices sound great! I have seen quotes of $2000 for the HUD and $1500 for the non-HUD I feel a little bit better seeing $875 and $500.

There is a significant difference in price for the two types of windshields, but I agree, some have used the non-HUD ones and say it is fine. I will have to think hard about which one I would go with if mine ever gets broken.

Don't you guys carry comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance? If so -why not submit a glass claim to your carrier and have them pay for the windshield. I would insist on an O.E.M. HUD windshield if that's what you have.

To keep my rates down, I have a $1000 deductible. Regardless of the deductible, you still need to do a C/B determination, because your rate may go with a claim.

I carry a $500 deductible for comprehesive too - but I have a $0 deductible for glass. Most carriers don't consider glass for rate calculations (unless there are a lot of claims on one car!) as it is a not-at-fault matter, with no contributory negligence. If you have an inordinately large number of claims on glass, I would think they would insist on a higher deductible, before a surcharge. Windshield glass is considered part of the safety equipment - in fact in many states, a citation CAN be issued for a cracked/broken windshield.
All I'm saying is that a clear non-sandblasted surface that is the correct part for the car is important and worth having new.
