Default Double Nickle--5th or 6th gear

For those of you that do go 55-60 once in awhile and own a 6 sp., do you ever run at that speed in 6th gear or is is not advisable. I know 6th at that speed runs the engine at about 150 rpm. Just wondering if I should keep it in 5th at that speed or move it to 6th. I know...I know... Dan

5th for cruising and even 4th if "quick changes" are required

I don't use 6th unless I'm cruising at 75+ on flat roads.

Sure no reason not to. The only thing is there's not as much get up and go. But there should be no reason why you can't. No detrimental reason not to. Unless there's something I don't know about. You learn something new here everyday so maybe this is the one I learn on today.

I found I get more carbon build-up in sixth unless the speeds are up. I would tend to run the motor a little faster.

At 55 I tend to stay in 5th. I use 6th when I am going 65 or faster.

I'm a stickler for saving gas and I get hassled if I go much over the speed limit. So I'm usually cruisin' 50ish in 6th .. 1000 rpm. Just dont hit the gas cuz she does nothing but bog. If there is traffic and you need to dodge cars, 5th.

And no, I dont believe it hurts the car. This has been done on mine for the last 33,000 miles.

oh yeh forgot to mention, I live in florida. So it's all flat.

The owners manual states that you need to keep the RPM's above 900. With that, around town I'm in 6th about 45 mph.

Lower oil pressure especially at operating temp.
