Default Shorten My Factory MN6 Shifter?

How much can I just cut off of the shifter threads to shorten the throw?

I really don't want to mess with re-tapping the threads if I can get a shortened throw from just removing the top part of the shifter.

What do you think?

If I remember right, I cut off between 3/4 and 1 inch without rethreading. I also added a flameball which is shorter than the stock ****. Works for me.

Did you thread another nut over the shifter to clean ot the threads or just "hack away?"

The safest way would be to use a 9/16-18 die - threaded on the shaft before cutting, but in all likelyhood, a nut will work out fine. I would also tape-seal the boot to the shaft to prevent metal scrap from getting inside.

Hacked then used a fine metal file to smooth things out.

How does this compare to just getting a aftermarket shifter? Height and smoothness wise

did it!

taped up the shaft to nearly an inch to be removed. Made a "surgical tent" to protect the interior and used my Dremmell tool. Took only a moment to cut it and the **** went right back on smoothly.

took longer to put up the tools than to make the mod.

Drove it and WOW what a difference.

I recommend this mod for all MN6 owners.

You guys have more courage than I do. Cut 5/8" , used a die threaded on first. Think as discussed here than 3/4" or a little more is safe although the boot gets a little tight.

Good improvement. Half a hour to an hour. The key also has to be shortened a little. Surprised about how easy and quick it was to cut the shifter.
