When I press the gas tank fill door release I open the door and the gas cap is loose. I always tighten it to three clicks. Does releasing the door somehow turn the cap?

Three Clicks? Something isn't right I don't remember "clicking." It seems like turn a 1/4 turn and it locks. This isn't like "normal" gas caps where you turn and let it click like a torque wrench. I suspect you aren't turning it sufficiently and it is clicking making you think it is on. Look at it closely
Mine always clicks. I always over tighten it since I've gotten check engine lights on previous GM vehicles for loose gas caps. I think it has something to do with pressure in your fuel tank.

But it's not just GM products - my wife had a Chrysler 300M, and it threw a code for the same reason. Emission controls require the gas tank to be a sealed environment to prevent evaporating fuel from escaping the tank - if there's a leak in the system, a code will set.
When you put the fuel cap back on, turn it to the right (clockwise) until you hear a clicking sound. Make sure you fully install the cap. The diagnostic system can determine if the fuel cap has been left off or improperly installed.
Your cap may need replacing. When replacing, it is important to get the right type. You may want to read what your owner's manual has to say about this and the Notice printed there.

When the gas cap is installed properly, you should hear a clicking sound. You may want to read what your owner's manual has to say about this.
Forget 3 clicks... Just give it a twist of your wrist. 3 clicks, 10 clicks, it doesn't matter. I don't count 'em! Been driving GM's since all this emission crap, and you just turn the cap and when it starts clicking, give it a nice twist and close the door. It won't overtighten the cap, and it saves the silly check engine light from coming on, and you won't have a loose cap next time you fill up.

I give it at least a 1/2 twist. But I am **** and get the decal right side up.

I just give mine a twist and at one click, a partial turn, it is secure.

Define what you mean by the cap is loose. The cap should be snug with just 3 clicks. It will not tighten to the point that the cap doesn't turn any more. That's just not how click type caps work.

Sorry bud, mine clicks. It is exactly one of those "normal" gas caps when you turn and it clicks like a torque wrench. It is the stock cap on my '97.
Thanks for all the posts. I rechecked the cap and it stays as is when I open the door. After I tighten it I am able to move it slightly left or tight without actually hearing a ticking noise that I do when I am removing it.
I'll take a ride over to the dealer and let them make sure it is going on correctly.
