The tool you need is a simple volt-ohm meter. Just measure the resistance. I looked in my factory maintenance manual for a table that converts the resistance to a key number. No joy! I went to the dealer to get a spare key. They were kind enough to determine what key number I had, then they wanted to sell me a replacement key for $55. I went home and ordered a blank key from Ecklers for $15.
I bought a 50th anniversary(03) corvette key part number 88955097 from Chevrolet dealer, it looks alittle nicer then plain plastic 04 key. $55.49 list my cost was $39.54. Just checked same part number on GM partsdirect.com and see that part number 88955097 lists for $29.15 cost $16.61. Guess I got stuck. Hope this helps.Save the Wave.>George
