Default Shell VPOWER GAS

I was talking with the service manager at the dealership where I got my Vette from and he was telling me about the new VPOWER gas from Shell. It's supposed to be the only brand GM recommends for the gas gauage issues. Apparently it's blended with an additive to keep the gauage working properly. He has been VERY helpful and supportive even with my mods which is very rare so be kind if you disagree, he is one of the good guys. He also mention that GM has an additive out now like BG-44k (or Techron) but much more expensive.....as if we would expect any less with Corvette tax Has anyone here at the Forum heard about this? Thanks all

I've been using BG-44K once every other month and that has worked but if there is a gas with the right additive available at the pump, we need to know. Now since Texaco was with Chevron but now Texaco is with Shell, does this mean Shell would be as affective as Chevron?

Nice to know and thanks for the information. Thankfully, I have not had any problems with the gas I buy. Not sure who distributes it, but my gas guage works fine.

I don't mind paying for premium gas. It was part of the deal before I purchased the car. But to have to use a certain type of gas because the general can't spend an extra few dollars on a reliable fuel tank sending unit is pure . If we read such a thing on a Mustang or Viper board we'd all be laughing our azzes off. How is it that Chevys other vehicles don't seem to have this problem but Vettes have had this from 97 and apparently still do? I love this car but is this what they think is "top of the line"?

Funny, I was avoiding Shell because I thought lots of people having gas guage issues were using Shell. Of course that was pre V-power, but I didn't think V-Power was anything new, just the latest marketing on high octane grade.

Oh well, no Shell for me and no gas guage problem yet. Now to go knock on some wood.

My gauge was "fixed" ah yah... By the stealership a little over a year ago. Well its back. However, I'm not convinced its the gauge problem. It went to empty and then my turn signals stoped working. I went over a bump at an entry to a shopping center and the gauge came back up and the signals started working again. I checked the pcm and it gave me the code P 1431 Fuel Level Sensor 2 Circuit Performance. So it could be happening again. Or not. And the signals have been working erratically the past few days. I guess I am going to have to remove the battery and check all the connections under there. Arggggg..... This is pure

The earlier link to the GM website didn't work for me. I did a search on the www.gm.com page and here is the article I found:

GM Supports Top Tier Detergent Gasoline
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Can Help Provide Optimal Fuel Economy and Reduce Emissions
A new class of gasoline, called Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, will be appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets detergency standards developed by four automotive companies. A description of the concept and benefits of Top Tier is provided in the following question and answer section.

What is Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline is a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency. It meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by four automotive companies that exceed the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.

Who developed Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards?

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards were developed by four automotive companies: BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota.

Why was Top Tier Detergent Gasoline developed?

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline was developed to increase the level of detergent additive in gasoline. The EPA requires that all gasoline sold in the U.S. contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases, is not sufficient to keep engines clean. In order to meet Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards, a higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Also, Top Tier was developed to give fuel marketers the opportunity to differentiate their product.

Why did the four automotive companies join together to develop Top Tier?

All four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.

What are the benefits of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance and reduced emissions. Also, use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline will help reduce deposit related concerns.

Who should use Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?

All vehicles will benefit from using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline over gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related concerns may especially benefit from use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline.

Where can Top Tier Detergent Gasoline be purchased?

The Top Tier program began on May 3, 2004. Chevron, QuikTrip and ConocoPhillips, who markets under Conoco, Phillips 66 and 76 brands, have met the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards and are offering this product in all octane grades and in all their respective marketing areas.

The gauage can drop dn to empty for no reason when your at around 1/4 tank of gas (in the early stages of the malfuntion). The sulfur in the fuels causes the sending units in the tank to go bad and malfuntion. So far I've been using BG-44K once every other month to help keep my sending units clean. Another product that has worked well is Chevron with Techron additive (Wal-Mart carries it). If you lucky enough to have Chevron gas in your area, many Forum members have not had any problems with that. The 1st time it happened I had my sending units replaced but it started happening again 6 months later. Bottom line never trust the gas gauage of your Vette!! The new Top-tier fuels are supposed to have a additive that GM recommends to prevent this from happening.

they sell it over here. 100 octane (98 europe = 93 US), so I'm guessing that it's ~94 octane. It may be in my head, but I swear my engine runs better with it. Every few tanks, I'll mix in 1/2 tank. The down side is that i have to pay full price for it, and it's 1.25 - 1.30 euros/liter so a full tank of the stuff costs $80-$90 :eek
