problem with battery companion?

problem with battery companion?

i bought a battery companion (same as battery tender) from auto zone for my optima red top. its a 1.5 amp trickle charger and has 3 led lights: charging, charged, and trouble. i connected it up the other night and it was in the charging mode then i checked it the next day and the led light for trouble was lit up. i connected it to the side terminals shouls i have connected it to the top terminals on the optima. what else could be wrong? if the battery is fully charged it would switch to the charged led right? any suggestions? thanx
