Default Need keys...

Hey Guys,

I just bought a 2002 coupe from a dealer (Ford!!) and was given one set of keys and remote. I want to get at least another two keys. Since the key has a "chip" in it, I can't go to Home Depot to get a key cut. Will the dealer be able to provide some help??

You'll need to get the dealer to order you a new key with the embedded chip. Call first to see what kind of identity confirmation they require as they're supposed to verify who you are and that you own the car before selling you a key.

You are correct, HD can't get you the right keys. Call around to some local locksmiths and ask if they handle the GM chip keys. I found a good one here in San Antonio. The deal with the keys is that the chip creates a specific resistence through the the chip. If you have one key, the locksmith can use a multi-meter to read this resistence and cut you the correct key. There have been postings here before listing the resistence readings, but I believe that there are about 15 different choices. The whole thing cost me $22 and took about 10 minutes. Dealers can do this for about 2-3 times the cost.

The chip is a resistor - and there are fifteen different values. Your local FRIENDLY Chevrolet dealer should be able to read the resistance and tell you the "value". There are 15 different codes. Once you know that you can either have the dealer make you a couple of keys or you can go somewhere like Eckler's and order the key. Then the key can be cut by any locksmith. Here's the web page info....

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...27UU0D0E9N2W9D

Eckler's also sells the right fobs for your car. You have to have a #1 and a #2. You should be able to determine from looking on the back of the fob whether your only fob is #1 or #2.

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...27UU0D0E9N2W9D

Once you have the fob, look in your owner's manual for the "how to" reprogram the fobs.

Enjoy your new ride!!! Welcome to the "brotherhood"!

I see nothing on the backs of my fobs to indicate #1 or #2. How would one tell?

Interesting note: the one that has been in my pocket for the last 6 years is bright and sniny, the other one which has been unused is textured and dull looking.

Alan - the fobs were changed in '00 and again in '01. Your fobs are like mine....in '97, '98 and '99, they had the PASSIVE switch along the bottom of the front under the buttons (see picture in link below)

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...27UU0D0E9N2W9D

These aren't labled #1 and #2. That change happened on the '01 - '04 fobs. Hope this helps!

Yes, the dealer can set you up. They will need to know the resistance value of the chip in the key and they should be able to identify that.

Local dealer here has blank keys in the parts department. You give him the original or the number (believe it's four digit) and he places it in a machine and reads the chip.
Puts in the blank, hits another button and it's done.
Word to the wise, make sure the key works before you leave the dealership.

Regards.

I bought my car at an independent dealership, and it only had one key and remote. They sent me to the Chevy dealer to get the others, and I think the key was $23 and the remote was $32, but that was a dealer-to-dealer price. I think the invoice indicated that the retail (if I'd paid for them) was about 50% more.

Default Try Local Locksmith

It is actually a VATS key (Vehichle Anti Theft System).
There are 15 values but value #1 is not in use on your year.
A local Locksmith should be able to duplicate the key.
In my shop we charge $15.00 and are located in Southern NJ.

But a fellow forum member would most definitely get a discount.
