Default Installing HUD

I started the installation of the heads up display in
my 04 coupe. Bought the parts from Gene at Fred
Beans for less than $300 shipped!

Still got to work on it some tomorrow. Here are some
pics of everything disassembled. Basically, I followed the
directions given at:
http://joshker99.home.comcast.net/hudinstall2.htm

to a tee. Although I was surprised to see that in my
04 coupe, there is no need to drill two holes to mount
the projector. The car now has 6mm bolts already in
place to mount to. Unfortunately, it took me a while
to figure out what size those bolts were, but now I
know. So if anyone else out there is thinking about doing
this, forget about all the drilling, just get a couple of
washers and 6mm nuts!

It looks much worse than it is. I am not very good with cars, yet it only took me about an hour to get it to the point shown in the pictures. Having detailed instructions definitely helped.

No, the HUD showed up just fine in daytime without any reflective coatings on the windshield.

How long to put it back together? I was thinking about adding the HUD to my 2004 Coupe as well but now I'm not sure. Seems like a tough job and I would be worried it wouldn't go back together like from the factory. Please post some pictures as you progress through the reassembly. Good luck and I envy you.

Default I'm doing it too.

I am currently in the middle of doing the HUD update to my 99. Unfortunately, it is an early 99, so I have to switch clusters and have the mileage transfered. Found a place over in Tampa to do the transfer, so doing that tomorrow, and then putting everything back together.

Finished my install this morning. The hardest part was cutting the dash
for the bezel, probably a couple of hours for me. I estimate that had I
worked on it straight, the job probably would have taken me about 6-7
hours, although I must admit that I am not great with cars. In terms
of level of difficulty, this wasn't that difficult. As I said above, the
pictures make it look worse than it is. Reassembly took only about an
hour. GM made life easy by using the same size screws for virtually
everything: T15 torx and 7 mm screws.

Default lucky.

I've been working on the HUD install on my 99 Coupe - good news was that the cluster was HUD enabled - just plug and play.

Bad news:
1. I don't have the columns for the tabs - I'll need to drill. Now if I cna only find a drill with a right angle attachment, or a 3 inch drill and bit (there's 3 inch clearance between the place you're supposed to drill and the windshield)

2. The wire harness I bough from Josh doesn't work with my cluster - the side that plugs into the cluster is the wrong size. Luckily the used parts I bough on e-bay included the wire from the swicth to the cluster.
(I'm starting to think it's included with the switch if you buy it from the GM parts store / Fred Beans)

3. Upon opening the windshield heater grate - there's the security LED on the right, and "supposedly" another sensor on the left - my car doesn't have anything on the left Either it went missing the last time someone opened up the car, or the 99 coupe didn't come with one - anyone have any ideas what the sensor on the left side of the grate is?

1. I used my Dremel w/ a 90 degree right angle attachment (Home Depot) to drill the holes for the mounting bolts. Worked great--EZ to drill.

3. There was no sensor on the left on my '98 either. I think it has something to do w/ DRLs. Don't worry about it. Good luck.

Like you, I only found one sensor on the defroster vent, so don't worry about that. When you buy the switch from GM, it does not come with a connector. I too bought one from Josh. It connects the switch to the instrument cluster. The projector does come with a cable and it too plugs into the instrument cluster. In reference to the question about cost above, the cost was $300 (projector + bezel + switch) + $45 for the 11-pin harness from Josh = $345 shipped. I will try to post pictures of the finished install later although there really isn't much to see. Just a hole in the dash with a plastic bezel over it.

Three bills for the projector, bezel and switch? That's pretty screaming. I will need to tell the wife, that would make a good xmas gift!
