Speaking on behalf of all the "average C5 owners", let me deeply apologize for offending you, oh great and wise genius of C5 information. We weren't aware that we needed your consent before we could buy and drive a car we enjoy.

Some people just drive them. I talked to someone 2 weeks ago that just found out that the trans was in the back.

Everyone has a different knowledge base about there car and thats ok. The mechanicals may not be that important to some and they just enjoy the car as is. Why even worry about it. Its there car not yours.

Learning all about the car is not for everyone. They may just want to enjoy the car without knowing how every single piece fits together or what the specifications are. Sure being able to do things to the car yourself is fun, but if you don't is OK too.

Me, I know very little about my car! Right now I know as much as I want to! When I get in it and it cranks up, I’m happy! I’m driving an American icon and I love it!

Now lets back up! I had a 66 SS396 running Super stock. I had a set of Doug Thorley headers that cost $250, in 1968. The 4 “ collectors were right under my feet. I was turning in the mid to high 11’s. This was in 68! I built all my engines, replaced the syncro’s in the 4-sp, installed the 5:13 gears R&P. I did it all!
Now I just want to get in my Vette and drive! No noisy pipes, no hassle, just great gas mileage! Am I wrong to be this way? I don’t think so!

I can appreciate where Neablas is coming from. Even if you don't know the engine displacement, there is much to learn about the history, the fact that the car doesn't have a SPARE TIRE, and if not anything else, the differences in the models--C1 to C6, Coupe vs FRC vs Z-06.

I love learning about my car... and I never had much of an interest in things automotive until I started learning about my car.

Just my nickel's worth...

Expect that crowd to be shifting over to the C6 section soon. There are car guys and show offs that are just pretending. My opinion is that it's nice not to be driving the "latest and greatest" thing anymore.

so maybe those vette owners were more into interior stuff and the "looks" of the car rather than the mechanical stuff...Who cares? what makes them "inferior" to you? Relax Everyone has their own unique interest and reason for having a vette..

this thread reminds me of a "i'm pissed off beacause i didn't get a wave back" thread.

remember we on the forum are not the only people that own a vette

not flaming you just wanted to give you a different out look

I can see where Neablas is coming from as I have learned a lot about my car since I got it. But that's the way I do things I'm passionate about.
Others obviously just wanted to drive a Vette, or could afford it, or think they look cool in it.
To each his own...

I was looking at a C6, but for some reason did not feel comfortable with it.
I did watch a show, I think it was on the history channel about the 6 and they had mucho problems to overcome to meet the date for release.
I had a lot of Vettes, but the C5 I bought is the best performer and most comfortable. Great MPG too.
Do I know all there is to know about it. No, but that is why this forum exists.
Will I do all the work on it myself? No I'm not young any more.
I'm sure I'll ask some stupid questions and I'm sure I'll get slammed occasionally, but you know. That's OK!
I think that if we all got together without name tags we'd be able to spot one another by their posts.
Educate the masses I say. Teach them "VetteSpeak".
Love that "Fantastic Plastic."
Mods to you!!!!!!!!!!!

I tend to agree that an owner should have a greater amount of knowledge of his or her corvette than the general public, but not to the extent of an experienced factory certified tech.

And it does really irritate me if one of the "I just drive it and put gas in it" types doesn't know or care enough about the car to keep it properly maintained. They should be renting.

I have the tools, skill and experience to do just about anything, but I have reached the point in my life where I regard my time as more valuable than the shop rate for a experienced factory certified tech; so unless its something I don't trust a tech to get right, I'll let them do it.

Finally, while I love my vette, I have lots of other toys I love that demand time and attention.

I have had my 03 for a year and i am still learning about all the buttons and ***** i have inside the car half of which i donot use.Have never had the heat on or the windshield wipers among other things. But then their are alot of other things i do know about the car.Since i use to work on my cars along time ago myself, but the cars of today are to hi tech for me so i let me mechanic help me out with what i need.I went to auto school along time ago i was the only girl in a class of 25 men and i did more car work then they did none of them ever wanted to get under a car or try to rebuild things but it was fun for me.

When I was younger I had to maintain my cars myself but I never liked turning wrenches. Now that I can afford it .... I don't. I let the pros do it. As for my time being valuable, I agree. My time is too valuable to be working on my car when I could be driving it or taking a nap.

But I don't put down those guys who do like to work on their cars. Everybody is different. I admire these people who not only know how to fix their own cars but share their info and insights with others here on the forum.

And I agree. I've taken to learning about Corvettes in general, not just the C5's. Corvettes have a rich and exciting history that's a lot of fun to learn about. But I'm not going to put down everyone else just because they don't have my love of history. I really don't think such knowledge is a requirement for buying the car. Could be wrong though, I guess.
