I just bought a 2001 Z06. Sometimes in first gear, I see messge "1 to 4 shift" and I am not sure but I feel when I try to shift to 2nd gear it's kinda being directed to 4th. Is this normal??

Yes, C5s (as well as Camaro/Firebirds) require you to shift from 1 to 4 when when you are going between 15 and 19mph at accellerations (like <20%). It was done to show better gas mileage fiqures. A CAGS elimiator...for around $18 in the forum mall...will disable it.
You can buy something which can bypass that crazy feature. The 1 to 4 light will still come on, but you can shift to what ever gear you want. It's called the CAGS bypass.
Get an iCags Skip-Shift Eliminator, and get it fast. Lots of places sell them online and installing it is extremely simple provided you can get under your car. That skip-shift annoyed the $#@$ out of me, wish I would have done it much sooner!
On the C4's, you could just crawl underneath the car and unplug the solenoid from the tranny. I don't know if the C5's require anything more than that but you might not have to buy anything.

You can't simply disconnect the skip shift solenoid on the newer cars!!! The car's computer wants to see a resistance at the end of the wiring harness or it will throw-up a trouble code. The aftermarket CAGS Defeat includes the resistor to fool the car's computer. Others have simply gerryrigged a 2200 ohm (my memory could be faulty regarding this resistance value) resistor across the wiring harness terminals to do the same thing if not as elegantly. The aftermarket device also protects the solenoid end with a connector cap to protect it against the elements to allow future reconnection if you desire.
