Default "security" idiot light

Search the forum and haven't found this one. I was driving down the road minding my own business when the "security" lamp lit up on my dashboard. No clue why. I kept driving for about 2 hours when I pulled off for gas. As an experiment, I turned the car off and restarted it and the light went off.

Any ideas? Just a gremlin I should forget?

This is a very advanced feature that many Vette owners do not even know they have. This feature is intended to let you know when you are driving through high risk areas. Once the sensors detect a threat...i.e. weapons or people with felony convictions nearby, it automatically illuminates the "Security" light thus letting you know that your personal security is at risk and giving you a heads up to get out of that area fast.

Just thought you guys might like to know about this.

I don't know if I was serious or not, but it seemed like a plausible story.

Here's what the manual says.

This light comes on to remind you to arm your theft-deterrent system. If it comes on and stays on when your ignition is on, there may be a problem with your theft-deterrent system.
It goes on to say

If the SECURITY light comes on while driving, have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.
Further info in the manual indicates that the light comes on as the car reads the resistor pellet on the key for the first time to verify the correct key value. I guess it's possible that you could have hit a bump or something that caused the key to shift and loose contact for a second. Which to me could be caused by almost anything. Our cars are so sensitive it's not that hard to throw a code. Could be a dirty key or a spec of lint made it into the ignition. I'd say if it doesn't come back, don't worry about. If it starts to happen more frequently you might get a new key, try cleaning your key, or have it checked out.

good info. did you find this in the owner's manual or the chassis service manual? I'm on the road and don't have my big manuals with me and would like to read more.

a trip to the dealer is always a sad time. good thing I have GMPP. Might be time to get my fuel gage and rings fixed too. I won't see the car for weeks

When I have to drive through the ghetto mine not only comes on but "flashes". Then, the DIC starts scrolling the message "HOMEY ALERT.......HOMEY ALERT........HOMEY ALERT...."

I'm guessing that the "homeys" who own vettes (or not for that matter) may not see the humor in that.

I've got the same problem with my 98. Just started happening a couple of days ago. It comes on after a couple of minutes and stays. It doesn't shut down the car, which would be scary, it's just annoying. I'll try cleaning the key with a contact cleaner.

Mine came on while driving through Detroit last week. Of course it may have triggered because I'm from Indianapolis.
