From Speedvision.com:
"Ron Fellows and Johnny O’Connell won the GTS battle, leading a Corvette 1-2 to finish fifth and sixth overall, 10 laps down to the overall winners. The Saleen/Konrad Saleen S7R of Terry Borcheller and Franz Konrad led early, but their tires (all three cars on Goodyears) gave up about 15 laps before the Corvettes’ did. Borcheller had to soldier home using a pair of Vice-Grip pliers to change gears after the shift lever came adrift, and finished 16th.

Fellows was all smiles after the race, and enjoying the fruits of the last couple of years worth of the Corvette team’s efforts.

"The Corvette deal is terrific and we have been involved since day one," he said, "but it is nice to see it all coming together. Johnny was able to do an extended stint on his old tires. Terry did 35 laps before he started to run out of grip at the rear. Our tires were not as fast as theirs, but we could run about 50 laps on each stint, so it was better for us.""

"Please explain how the C5R's "crushed" the Saleen. Ya got me curious."

The C5R's were a lap up on the Saleen at the end of the race. I think they were crushed when beat by both Corvette's in a short race.
The Saleen is very fast when (if)it stays together.

Great job C5Rs!

It still looks like they need more speed however. The C5Rs should win when all cars are running perfectly--not when the S7s have mechanical, etc. problems. I am sure that GM/Katech are working on this!

CALVette,

I was told that the shifter on the Saleen has about 5 u-joints!
It seemed to be running fine but just slow, I told Cricket that I was thinking it was gears.

I hear all of this about tires but the tires were getting the job done for the Saleen in the early part of the race. The Saleen was out accelerating the C5R in the back stretch. But that was VERY short lived because the C5R was gaining on all the cornering of the track. After Ron passed him he lost his ability to accelerate faster than the C5R.

Bottom line is Ron pushed him to push his car and it couldn't take it. The only way the Saleen could catch up to the C5R was under the benefit of the yellow flag. IMHO

David,

Great meeting at dinner the other night. How did the lady enjoy the ride around the track in your car?
Also, thank you for bring your car up to the Corvette Corral.
