I just bought a new Valentine 1 (yes, I really like the arrows and I live in a rural area so false alarms are not an issue; so let's not get into an argument over which detector I should have bought).
I'm looking for some input as to the best way to mount the unit. I would like to hear from members as to their experience with the various mounts and what works and what doesn't.
Is hardwiring worth the hassle?
Don't mean to "beat a dead horse", I know that there have been a lot of posts on this topic, I'm looking for the latest and/or new information...or just your opinion.
Mine is mounted using the suction cups, to the right of the mirror, just below the tint. I hardwired to the pass footwell, and mounted the remote display in front of the fuel gauge. It is worth the 1/2 hour it takes to hardwire, imo, to get rid of the dangling lighter cord.
I "hardwired" it by running the V1 supplied 8' RJ11 cord through the windsheild header, down the passenger side A pillar, through the dash and then behind it into the passenger side footwell. There's a fuseblock there, and hardwired it by splicing the supplied converter into the pigtail.
I chose the pair of wires that are hot when the ignition is on, that way the detector turns off when the ignition is off.
It doesn't vibrate or shake and works out very well! Sorry I have no pics of the installation, but I suppose I could take some and email them to you.
I can't believe you bought that piece of crap. I mean seriously I've been using it for the past 3 years and it's brought me nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Used the suction cups and put it to the left of the rearview mirror and hardwired it to back of radio. However if I were to do it again it'd hardwire it to the rearview mirror. (When I was installing I couldn't find the right color)

Huh?
I know you're joking - This told me that, but I don't get it.
Must be all the triptophan from all the turkey I ate!

It is my hope that this piece of crap also brings me nothing for 3 years.
This brings up another question: I have a 2000 coupe, my mirror is the old type; can I hardwire it to the V1?

Reason: addition
I just clip my V1 to the passenger sunvisor and have it hardwired to passenger footwell fuse panel.
I tried the mirror mount and didn't like it because of how visual it makes the detector from the outside and it made it more difficult to remove it quickly to stash it in emergencies.
I liked the suction cups but they would sometimes lose suction it would eventially fall off the windshield after a while.
I've mounted mine using the mirror mount from greatlakes (approx $20.). I bought a wire kit that connects the V1 to the mirror wire connector (forgot where I got the wiring kit (approx $12.)). This setup works great for me. I'd do it over again if I had to.
It is a bit of a pain, but if you can find the custom made hardwire cables
(found mine on ebay, don't remember where), these would make it much
easier. I did not create the following images, but used them for my install
(thanks to the person who did);

I did the same but on the left side of the mirror and with the forward sensor just barely under the tint. It cannot be seen from outside unless you bend way over and look up through the drivers side windows. My remote is in the same place - in front of the fuel guage. I have the HUD so no worries there.
I looked at the mount under the mirror - but you can see your $400 detector from the outside - not smart (in my humble opinion)
Can't stand clutter - everything mush look like a factory install or I don't want it in my car.

OK...so HOW did you mount it to the left side of the mirror ?
Here is the info for the guy that makes the wire to hardwire the V1 or Passport into the rearview mirror. Cost is $ 11.50 total. He can make it in any length you want. 6 to 8 inches is best for mounting under the mirror with the Great Lakes Trophy Bracket, CLICK HERE maybe a little longer to mount to the side...not sure on this as mine is mounted under the mirror with the bracket.
His paypal ID is... teambiker@yahoo.com you send him the money there he will send you the wire.
and his email is...ccm.gerber@verizon.net...if you have questions.
The wire is a standard phone jack plug ( its an RJ-11 )connector where it plugs into the V1. The V1 manual even tells you about doing this. You could buy the connector at Radio Shack and make the wire yourself for cheap. I bought mine from him because I am lazy
Make sure that the V1 "sees" out the rear window . . . so you must keep it low enough to see the rear window. Do not understand why people want to hide their V1 s.

My V1 bracket is mounted to the passenger side visor clip keeping it level and provides a better clear rear view for the rear antenna. I have the remote display mounted to the dash gauge cluster.
I bought the mount from great lakes and hated it! I did not like the suction cups either so I ended up making a mount out of aluminum. It is the simplest thing ever and bolts into the visor clip on the right hand side. With it mounted there, like others have said, you can not see it from outside the car unless you are really really looking for it. I can post pics and details of the mount I made if anyone is interested. It cost me about $3.00 to make.

The concept of a visor clip mount made sense to me. I had hoped to use the visor clip included with the V1 but I found that it was too high or low to be effective or comfortable. We are really interested in seeing your pics! Thanks!
