Default Center Console Heat

I took a drive down to SD airport yesterday to pick up a friend and noticed that the inside of my center console was HOT. The lid kept the heat from transferring to the inside but I mean it was HOT in there. Hot enough I was worried about my cell phone being in there.
Now isn't that heat Tranny heat? I hadn't noticed this before 'cause I never go digging in there while driving. But the tranny shouldn't be running that hot. Fluids are fine. Driving was "normal". Not that long of a trip (40 miles or so).
Any ideas? Or is the console just not that insulated?
Even just the carpet of the center console in my ‘66 Chevelle insulates enough to keep the heat out.

Thanks.

Thanks gents. If the cell phone fries in there, I'll consider it justice enforced by my Z06.

Heat comes from the Headers and exhaust pipes.

when I put on long tube ceramic coated headers that was the first thing I noticed, no heat in the foot well or between the seats.

answer to heat in the foot wells and between the seats are LONG TUBE CERAMIC COATED HEADERS.

Plus headers give you a few extra ponies to play with

All C5's are like that due to the exhaust system being routed through the tunnel/ center consol area of the car. I would also go with the ceramic header option to cut down heat and increase performance

I just added one of those 1/4" thick tunnel plates. No more heat in center console. The car will ride a little rougher. No performance gain in cornering either. Does take the heat away though.

I'm sure you know this- that I really needn't point it out, 'cause I'm sure you've studied up on your new car, so please forgive me if I'm pointing out what you already know, but the "tranny" isn't under there. It's back next to the diff.

What IGO said. ;>)

When I installed my SIRIUS radio system and had the interior torn apart, I put some heatshield down under where the console is and it took care of the heat problem.

Heat comes from the Headers and exhaust pipes.

Add a tunnel plate or tunnel shield and it will keep the heat out of the center console.

Jet Coated Headers, Tunnel Heat Shield, & Dynomat Extreme = cool center console.

Of course also makes them easer to explain to the wife.

Yes a tunnel plate would do the same thing, but will the tunnel plate provied a few more HPs and a new sound at WOT???

or as ZO6-JIM said, get them all
