I took a drive down to SD airport yesterday to pick up a friend and noticed that the inside of my center console was HOT. The lid kept the heat from transferring to the inside but I mean it was HOT in there. Hot enough I was worried about my cell phone being in there.
Now isn't that heat Tranny heat? I hadn't noticed this before 'cause I never go digging in there while driving. But the tranny shouldn't be running that hot. Fluids are fine. Driving was "normal". Not that long of a trip (40 miles or so).
Any ideas? Or is the console just not that insulated?
Even just the carpet of the center console in my ‘66 Chevelle insulates enough to keep the heat out.
All C5's are like that due to the exhaust system being routed through the tunnel/ center consol area of the car. I would also go with the ceramic header option to cut down heat and increase performance
I just added one of those 1/4" thick tunnel plates. No more heat in center console. The car will ride a little rougher. No performance gain in cornering either. Does take the heat away though.
I'm sure you know this- that I really needn't point it out, 'cause I'm sure you've studied up on your new car, so please forgive me if I'm pointing out what you already know, but the "tranny" isn't under there. It's back next to the diff.
When I installed my SIRIUS radio system and had the interior torn apart, I put some heatshield down under where the console is and it took care of the heat problem.
