When at the NCM's 10th Anniversary The Detailing Dude Mike Martin used the pad that comes with the unit. He just had several of them. But only used #86 3M polishing medium. That was all he used and it took care of all the imperfections and buffed out to a great shine.
The type of pads or cutter you may want to use depends on how bad your paint surface is. They come in a heavy, medium or light/polish pads. Meguiar's products indicates the degree of cleaner/polisher best describe your surface needs. I've prefer the "Lake County Pads" with my Porter Cable Polisher. Yellow is a heavy pad for oxided paint and a white pad for a slight oxidation. My recommendation is to start with a white pad and a #9 (swirl removal) cleaner. If you are not getting the smooth or desired surface results, adjust to either a heavier cleaner (#80-83 cleaner) and/or a heavy pad (yellow). Oh yeah, start your obital speed at 4. I find the higher the speed, the more it cuts. And never mix the different cleaners on same pad before washing out the first used cleaner.
Just forwarding my experiences with auto detailing. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info guys, I never realized that there were so many different types of pads. Now I just need to get a few and try them out to see which I prefer.
I just bought a kit which came with the Porter Cable polisher and a box of several Sonus pads. I also bought a couple of grades of Menzerna polish. I haven't opened it yet ... the weather just hasn't cooperated. I'll probably try it out while I'm out for Christmas, but I'm going to get a little experience first on my truck before I try it on the Vette.
Just ordered a Porter Cable with a kit from Autopia and it comes with every pad that you may ever need. Also, Autopia is offering a Holiday discount of 15% on all orders. I think I recieved a great deal...
