Default mudflap question

Our damn roads in Phoenix just seem to have tons of pebbles/rocks on them and they seem to find my new ride. Someone posted that there brake intake ducts are taking a beating, so looked at mine after only 1200 miles, sure enough, they're taking a beating.

I want to make the sinfill mistake of putting some kind of mudflaps on and saw and write up about a guy in California with a hopped up Z06 and he had installed nice form fitting mudflaps made by a company called Altec. I have searched high and low and can't find them. Anybody have any info on that brand or a similar type and where I can purchase?

Eckler's carries the Altec splash guards. But if your ducts are getting trashed, so is your expensive paint. I'm going with a 3M clear bra install, and will simply replace the ducts when they get too beat up. More tips on the "clear bras" thread.
Good luck.

Ecklers is where I got mine from.
Here's a pic after the install.
They cut down on the damage but do not totally eliminate it. My ducts are still somewhat beat up but, my car is also a daily driver.

i have midameican mudguards. I concur, they help reduce abuse, but nothing will halt it entirely.

I put a pair on the front of mine. Worked good until a spirited drive on a bouncy road. Bottomed out the flap (not the car) and destroyed the passenger side flap. It also rubbed up the paint in that area very badly.

Even with the flaps my rockers look sandblasted.

My car is beat to heck from the track days.... I might just not bother with it now.

If I had to do it over again I'd get the clear film treatment to the full rocker areas.

With the form fitting guards you have to drill holes in the fenders. Depending on your car and the guards you get you may have trouble running a hole in the fender. The MAD ones I bought to put on my 97 required drilling the hole right at the point where the rear wheel well rounds into the fender. So I was drilling on a curved surface and when I went to put the speednut on the back side of the fender there wasn't enough space to fit the nut in that little curve. As somebody mentioned above the front ones are susceptible to clipping objects you run over including a bumpy road. This is with a non-lowered car. If you lower the car you will hit every bump. The non-form fitting guards don't require drilling in the painted areas of the fender and they can be adjusted to cover a larger area. If they are set low enough they can protect the rockers while the guards are new. However, over time they bend backwards a little and will allow more dirt to hit the rockers. They do a bang up job of keeping the lower door panels free from paint chips. They will chip the paint at the top edge where they rub against the fender and they will abrade the paint from the very bottom of the wheel well opening as they tend to vibrate there also. At least at the bottom you can put a piece of duct tape on the fender to protect the paint and it can't be seen behind the guard.

The 3M tape is probably the best choice but is going to cost 10 times more.

They came prepainted from Altec and the color match was nearly perfect. I installed them a couple weeks after purchasing the car.

I don't know if the color would match an older car due to paint fade/changes that occur over time. But, they are worth every penny they cost. I've had to modify the design some. Like others have said, they are low and have the potential to clip things. Especially when your car has to go into the shop for work and people don't head the "my car is very low, please be careful jackingk, putting it on the lift etc" warnings. I've had more than one shop bang them up. The last time it happened the shop agreed to repaint them and now the paint does not match well.
