I have had two oil analysis performed on my Mobil 1. First oil change was done at 5800+ miles and the oil was in excellent condition. Second oil change was done with 6200+ miles on the oil, and the oil was in very good condition. The TBN was still high on both of the reports. If you are running a K&N or similar type filter, you might want to change around 20 percent due to the increased amount of dirt a K&N type filter allows into the engine.
On my last 5000 mile oil analysis report, I saw only 7ppm of silicon (dirt) while running a K&N air filter on my C5. So not all K&Ns let in lots of dirt. I don't normally recommend these air filters, but mine came with one installed by the previous owner, so out of curiosity I thought I'd leave it in for at least one oil interval. When I saw how well it did, I decided to leave it in. It'll only get better with age too, as the longer you leave a K&N in, the more dirt it will trap (until it's totally clogged) I don't plan on cleaning this filter for a long long time (and when it's done I'll go with a paper filter for comparison sake)
30 Minutes for the oil change, and 2-1/2 hours for the test drive??
30 minutes for the oil change. 2 1/2 hours for the test drive, and a six pack staring at the underside of the car to make sure there is no leaks. By my watch that is a good 6 hours worth
Does the General support that reading as a guide for oil changes? If synthetic oil is so great would there be a time limit on its life as opposed to a milage reading? I don't want my factory warranty to become void. Thanks!
I have an 02 Z06 and an 03 Chevy Trailblazer and the owners manual for both says to change the oil per the oil life indicator or at one year, whichever occurs first.
This is very similar to AMSOILs recommendation of 25,000 miles or one year, whichever occurs first for their SAE Synthetic oils (with filter change at 12,500 miles or six months).
Here is an ongoing independent test showing that both Mobil 1 and AMSOIL can safely go longer than 3000 miles. Both oils were tested every 1000 miles and both lasted a full year of driving before they changed the oils out. During the year they drove with Mobi1 1, they went 18k miles and testing showed they needed a new filter at 12k miles. During the year they drove with AMSOIL, they went 14k miles and didn't need a filter change. Synthetic Oil Life Study
