Default Help w/ Battery I.D. Please

I picked up a 2001(early 1/2001) vert a month ago and have been reading on this forum about the manufactures battery leaking. I am trying ID my battery to see if it is one of the ticking time bombs.

On the top label states:

ACDelco Professional
75-6YR
650 CCA

and it is all black and has side posts with no eye on top??? Thanks!! Steve

Beginning in model year 2001, GM installed the new and lighter Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries in the coupes and verts from the factory. If your battery is one of the AGM batteries, you shouldn't need to worry about it leaking. I believe the numbers and specs on the AGM batteries may have changed some through the model years and I don't know all the numbers. However, if yours is an AGM battery, it should say "AGM" on one of the label, so look closely at these, especially the label that shows any catalog or replacement model number. My '03 vert has an AGM battery. Like yours, it has side posts and doesn't have the eye on top, but the numbers are different than yours. In model year 2004, GM went back to the top-post lead acid battery. Hope this helps.

I don't know the answer to that. May be others here can provide some insight. As I mentioned above, for model year 2004 GM changed back to a top-post lead acid type battery and this is all I know about the 2004 batteries. All the posts I've seen here in the past on the leaking Delco batteries were for the older lead acid batteries with side posts. For model years 2001 through 2003 GM install the AGM type batteries from the factory and I don't recollect seeing any posts reporting problems with the AGM batteries leaking.

Talk to your dealer and they'll tell you.
I think that's what my 2000 had, and it now has an Optima.

Only problem the AGM battery has is it will get a bad cell (no leakage) in very warm climates, which is a problem with any type of auto battery. Warranty on batteries is over three times higher in hot climates, versus cold climates.

My '02 has the Red Top Optima which the previous owner put in. However, it, too, has side posts. Will it leak?

Default Optima Leak?

I don't know if the optima will leak or not leak! I have researched with MFG. on sealing the post. It is clearly superior to other batteries for leakage. Now the disclaimer. The battery is warranty for leaks like a parachute. If it leaks they will give you another one, but they will not cover damage to your car. So even with Optima I would use the mat. Just my $.02 worth.

Optima's are AGM type yes. They are guaranteed leakproof, even upside down.

There is no liquid in a red-top to leak.

Thanks for the info, would there be any advantage to running the Yellow top in a Vette?

The yellow-top is a deep-cycle battery that is more effective if you have LOTS of mods that require constant battery power-feed (big sound systems, video systems, etc.) For normal use, a red-top is fine.
