Default Just got a 2002 z06

Hello all,

Last week I picked up a 2002 silver Z06, the car has 22k mi, and is in excellant condition, (prestine in fact). I love it to pieces.

Being my first Z06, My first Vette, and in fact my first american V8 sports car, I have a few questions. First off the car needs new rubber. Currently it has very worn Nitto 555R extream II's on factory rims. (305/35 R18 rear, 285/40 R18 front)

A friend of mine with a Z06 recommended I go back to factory tires size, and the OE Supercar tires. A few phone calls later, I discoverd that the SC tires would hit the wallet for about $1400, where the 555RII's would come in at about $998. I have searched the forum and found many threads on the subject, but no one who is looking for a tire that will be driven daily, and only see the track on very occasions. Given similar tread life, would I be better off getting new 555R's? Any other recommendations?

Second, the front brake rotors appear deeply worn. There is a definate wear ridge around the outer edge of the rotor. The pads look even and are about 50% worn. What is the minimum thinkness on the stock rotors? Is this deep bedding of the pads into the rotor normal?

Where is a good place to pick up an owners manual, and a shop manual?

That is it for now, but I'm sure I will be loaded with questions as I become more familar with the car.

Oh BTW I ordered my first mod today, a CLB kit. Thanks for the heads up on this issue.

Gad

I think that Kumho Ecsta's are your best budget tyre. Not in the same league as the Supercar tyres but far better than their price suggests.

My 02 Z06 has only 4000 miles on it and already has visible traces of heat cracks. I guess it's the price you pay for having such good brakes. Replacement rotors are available and easily fitted.

You might want to also consider the Toyo Proxys. I have no first hand experience, but have heard good things about them!

The rotors are shot. Stock rotors are relatively cheap. If you are thinking about tracking the car, I wouldn't even consider turning those rotors.

You may want to shout out to the guys/gals who run the road courses and get their experiences with eating brakes/rotors at the track!

Try Fichtners Chevrolet for parts/manuals, etc. Here is a link to Ken: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/memb...oster&t=965365

Congrats on the purchase and an excellent first mod!

Yes, it is garaged. It was outside because I took those pictures as soon as I drove it home. At that point in time I had owned the car for less than an hour.

It sure was an intereasting drive home, the rear tires are so worn out, I thought they were slicks. There is NO tread at all on them.

Congrats! I have run OEM SC, BFGR DR and Kyhmo ECSTA V700s. A budy has Kuhmo MX and he loves them. The V700s are sticky as hell but the throw way too much crap up on your car (lots of washing waxing ect...). I would check out some MX from tire rack. Enjoy!

I just installed some Toyo Proxies T1-S on all four corners of my Z and they look awesome! I haven't put very many miles on them since they have only been on my car for 5 days. I got them in OEM sizes, mounted, balanced and installed for $725.28 at a local Toyo dealer. I got on the Toyo website, typed in my zip code and found the Toyo dealer. I read a lot of threads on this forum from other members before deciding on the Toyos.

As far as the brake rotors, I replaced my factory OEMs with some cross-drilled and slotted rotors from Sportbrakes. They look great and the guys at Sportbrakes were very helpful. I bought all four brake rotors for $249.00 plus shipping. I also replaced the brake pads with ceramic pads because the OEM pads create A LOT of brake dust. I had to clean my rims every 2-3 days because of the brake dust and didn't even drive the car very far. With the ceramic pads I go weeks between cleaning my rims.

I hope this helps. By the way, great color choice and congratulations on your Z06.....you will have a smile on your face every day....I've had one for 2 years now.
