...Now the Corvette is less $$$ appox. $10,000 to $20,000 depending on new or used. I'm talking about a fairly new car on both sides.
....
Did you use an Al gore calculator The base price on a 2005 Viper is $81,500 and $43,700 for the Vette, that is a difference of $37,800. I can think of lots of cars I take over the Viper.
Vettes were around quite a while before the GT40.
It's still a Ford.
Nice looking, not long on legs regarding repairs.
Friend of mine had a Ford Magusta back in 70 (dased on the GT40 and it was a POS. 429 Cobra Jet in the rear and he replaced three transaxles and two engine rods in 6 mos.
I'll take the C5.
Thanks for all the replies! I do have a 2002 Vette that has been modded 457RWHP. I love it. I have thought about purchasing a Viper as well. They both seem to be sweet cars.
There was a Learning channel show regarding the C5 Lingenfelter and the Viper Venom.
The differences were negligible and top end was the Lingenfelter. The Venom was 6 mph slower.
My vote is for the Vette hands down. Best bang for the buck high performance car out there. But if you are talking about just just pure performance the Viper wins. With a 505 CI engine stock for stock and mod for mod the Viper will be faster traction permitting.
The Viper is a much more focused car than the vette. As someone mentioned it is not a daily driver. The vette is certainly the best bang for the buck and is wonderful for both driving around town and screaming sub 10s on the strip. The vette is more easily modified than the viper and no car can beat the vette's community of owners.
I own a C5 coupe and have driven a Viper GTS ACR, I think I got that right. Basically at the time, about 3 years ago it was the grandaddy Viper. It was quick and tight with I think 410 hsp? The new ones are quite faster (I think pushing 500 hsp) but they really screwed up the design. The earlier ones had that brute american muscle look to them. The latest were designed by a Japanese designer and they look too smoothed out almost a Honda influence.
They are definitely not everyday drivers. I also think the guy paid like $75k plus (this is in So. Cal.). A current Z06 will run you in, what guys?, the low to mid $50ks? Thats what they were the last time I actually saw a sticker. But if you are patient enough to wait for the C6 Z06 (and correct me if I'm wrong guys) you are looking at 500 hsp. for less $$$ than the Viper.
If you do decide Viper and go used, keep in mind the earlier Vipers only came with a soft, zip-on roof similar to a Jeep Wrangler (I only say this beacuse everbody selling them always shows a picture with the top off).
as the owner of a 94 viper and a 03 vette they are both awesome cars.the viper feels more like a race car as in the seats are very snug fit, unlike my vette which is more like a cadillac, more room and can fit taller people. as far as performance goes , stock for stock the viper would win, BUT there is a big price difference. i bought my vette to mod because it is somewhat cheaper to mod and with a few thousand more , it will bet my viper. just my nickels worth.
The Vette would be more comfortable for a daily driver if that's what you need. I don't like anything Chrysler makes including the Viper. I bet you'd have more problems with it than the Vette, mechanically. But get what you like and can afford. I bet with some tweaking most Vettes could be made to at least hold their own with a Viper.
And the sad thing is that whether you like it or not, you have to admit that the Viper is at least partially responsible for the current state of the Vette.
Look at the power output of the C4 and compare that to the C5 and especially the C6. IMO, the Viper raised the bar in the '90's and us Vette fans have reaped the benefits.

Back in the '90's the Vipers won a lot of races. Then the Vettes took over and you don't see the Viper much anymore.
When you consider the prices though, I think the Vette has the better bang for the buck. If I could have bought a low mile pristine Viper for $27k a year ago, I would have. They are more like twice that, unfortunately (used of course).
The only thing that I don't like about the Viper beyond the cost, is the sound. Maybe someday I can afford one.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
