Yesterday I ordered up a set of DR's for my Z. I appreciate everyones feedback and decided to go with a set of BF Goodrich 315/30/18's. Today I am having stock chrome wheels mounted and next week when the DR's arrive I'll have them put on my stock wheels. This will be a new learning experience at the track as I have never driven a vehicle with DR's.
If you do not have a hardened output shaft, be careful launching...Quite a few have snapped on stock cars doing alot of damage in the process. I was lucky and ran all season without one, but I'm putting one in this winter...

how much do they cost (the hardened output shafts)?
If you're near stock, you don't have anything to worry about on DRs UNLESS you try to do the burnout with DRY tires and do so forward (toward the line) of the water box in the black sticky area. But if you make that mistake, you can break the rear on stock tires or DRs.
Other than getting a sticking clutch pedal (repaired under warranty), I haven't broken anything in 200+ passes on my 02 Z and 125+ on my 01 Z. Just need to remember, do your burnout with damp tires just forward of the water box.
Ranger, I too have not broken mine, although I have about 100 passes and am too getting my clutch replaced under warranty, wow, we have alot in common, except our ET's of course. but I'm trying!
At the second last Corvette Challenge Dr.Ron broke his shaft with DR's and a vararam, he did his burnout, lined up, and the second he launched, pow! he went nowhere. I'm sure he'll chime in, but I believe it cost him about 3 grand to have repaired, that of course is a worst case scenerio, but for 300 bucks it seems like really good insurance. I'm having mine installed for free with my clutch, now thats a really good deal! Although the part is inexpensive, the labor is a bit expensive.

I was afraid I'd have to rehash that! Such is true, unfortunately.
It was a normal burnout & on green, the car just dead hooked & shazzam! Sounded like an explosion in the rear, & after Chris @ ECS showed me what I'd done, that's exactly what must have happened. Chunks of metal blown off!

Hey, Dr. Ron. What was your launch rpm when it broke. I'm guessing the same as usual.
I watched a bone stock Z06 break the rear while cleaning off the tires before its maiden pass. Sometimes $ hit happens. Just hasn't happened to me so far. But I try not to launch above 5000, unless it's bogging.
And good luck with the clutch install, CYA Vette. Always a sign of a good dealer when they are willing to install hardened parts during other warranty work. How many passes were on that original clutch? If it was 100, no need to reply.

Hey Ranger. It was like my 3rd, maybe 4th trip to the track w/ the DR's. I was going to ATTEMPT a 5000rpm launch. Prior to that, I had been launching at 45-4800 mostly with maybe 2 5000rpm launches thrown in there. I decided to try to go higher up in the rpm's for a few runs. I bought 2 tech tickets figuring I'd use the ECSCC & time trials to get my launch down pat. Wouldn't you know that on my FIRST pass of the day I broke!!!
The only thing I can think of is that being it was going to be my 1st pass of the day, MAYBE I came off the clutch a tad quicker (slightly less slip) then usual. I almost always improve w/ each pass I make. I didn't & don't dump the clutch. I guess the tires just all out grabbed & it was one of those things!!! I guess it was just my time????

It had better not Ranger! Chris @ ECS put in hardened tranny parts & a hardened output shaft, along with the DTE strut brace. What frightens me about what you said is that you have a better chance of being struck by lightning twice then dying in a plane crash!!!! (knocking wood as I type)
Happy holidays!
