Is there a problem with Blackwing, Halltech, Vararam type intakes that have an open element getting wet when you drive in the rain or is this a non issue...

I have the Blackwing on my car and have driven it in the rain a number of times. Absolutely no problems at all. I do have the hood seal which I suppose does help keep some water from going onto the filter.

I agree. I had a Blackwing on my 99, and currently have a Halltech Stinger on my 04 Z, no water problems with either setup. The hood seal keeps rain water and car wash water off the filter.
I have the Halltech Stinger, with the cut out for fresh air...if by chance I was gonna be in rain, I have a plastic shield that I slide under the filter covering the opening

Scratch - Could you post a picture of your cover? I just completed Dave's cold air mod. and I was thinking of doing the same thing.

Good Idea Tony. Now that's using your head.
I have a roll of tape in my car, painters tape, used mainly for behind the wheels on track days to protect the paint BUT also will use that same tape to cover up the 2 intake opening used by the Vararam should I ever be out when very heavy rain is predicted. Most likely will NEVER happen, but I have the tape as a back up to my bad luck.

I have the Haltech Trap. The filter sits right in the nose behind the front license area. I cover over the Z06 screens (shrouds cut out) with duct tape to prevent heavy water from getting to the filter.

The Halltech Stinger and the Blackwing locate their filters in the same location as stock. If your stock Corvette would be okay, they would too.
The Vararam (and the Halltech TRAP and Tunnel Ram) are "bottom feeders". Under normal conditions (i.e. rain), that's not a problem. It's only a problem when you drive through deep standing water, then it can be a BIG problem. Under those conditions, they can draw water into the cylinders creating a condition known as "hydro-lock". Water doesn't compress. That means when the piston tries to go up in a cylinder filled with water, it can't and something has to give. This usually results in a broken crankshaft.
