My 2000 cpe,s battery died in July of 2003 and was replaced under warranty. How can I tell if they replaced it with an AGS battery? You guys got me so paranoid I am replacing the batteries in my smoke detectors now. Which is a subtle reminder to you all. ......change them out every New Years. Now...back to my question.....how can I tell if I have a potential leaker?
The Absorbant Glass Mat (AGM) battery from GM will be itentified as such on the top label on the battery. GM went back to a wet cell battery in 2003 due to premature failure of many of the AGM's they installed in the couple of previous model years, mine included. AGM's won't leak so don't be concerned if that's what you have. I popped in an Optima Red Top after my AGM died 9 months after delivery.

It should say on the battery if it is an AGM. If for some reason it doesn't, you can go to a parts store and ask them what it is. Just take the model number.
When the original AGM battery died in my '01 after approx. 9 months, the dealer replaced it, under warranty, with another AGM. Unfortunately, all of the stickers (labels) had been removed. Yesterday was the car's 4 yr. birthday -- so the second battery lasted long enough. Time to start looking for Optima or Exide spiral wound AGM.

Correct on how to tell if it is an AGM or not; incorrect on the model year GM went totally back to non-AGM batteries. My '03 came with an AGM battery; this I know for a fact. They may have gone to non-AGMs later in the year; this I cannot say for certain. In '04, GM went to a top post non-AGM battery.
My AGM ('01) went almost exactly 3.5 years. It seems from responses to my recent battery thread that they either go like flipping a switch, or slowly as indicated by DIC and HUD resets and assorted codes.
I too have used Optimas with great success for years, but if their case cracks (I know since they don't pack 'em nearly as well as they used to) even the slightest, they will run copious amounts of acid all over, too. I've a brand new one to dispose of delivered damaged before being packed for shipping.
If your replacement battery is an AC-Delco, the following from the C5 Tech Tips section of the Forum should help you determine if it is an AGM type battery: 1997 - early 2001 Battery Acid Leakage Issue
As others mentioned above, GM discontinued the AGM batteries and went to a top post lead acid type battery for model year 2004.
