I've had my MN6 (with CAGS bypass) for 3 months. Can I have your thoughts on shift points and what gear to use for city driving. For example, which is better:
- to shift at around the recommended RPM's most of the time, and end up driving at around 2,000 RPM, which seems to minimize gas consumption but is kinda boring....or
- shift after ramming each upshift to around 5-6,000 and then ending up at around 3,000 RPM in 3rd at 40 to 50 mph in non-highway driving, which is fun but eats up gasoline big time. Can't get those 25-30 mpg doing this.
For my style of driving, 3000 RPM is too high for just going down the road at a steady speed.
I like to be at about 3000 if i'm preparing to punch it though.
It all depends on what mood you're in at the time.

Personally - I upshift around 2300rpm and typically keep in it the 2000 rpm range around town. With the Corsas growling, I don't need to attract LEO attention anymore than I already do!
On the highway, I like to get into 6th around 70mph, so that I can listen to the stereo and my wife - even with the top down.
Besides, the thrills are just a downshift away if I wanna be a bad boy!

Yep, I'll second that! Like sedan said, "fun" is just a downshift away!
Never even look at the tach except at WOT. Shift by feel and current attitude. Oh, and now with GHLs, sound factors in. I Never worry about fuel economy.
Except at highway speeds, I try to always have the car in a gear that will let me accelerate if I need to. Done the same through 35 yrs of driving sticks.

In town, I usually have it in 4th. I try to shift at about 2300-2500 rpms which is plenty to keep up with the traffic flow. I really don't see any need to rev it up to 5000-6000 rpm with every shift.

Around town I short shift from 1st to 3rd to 5th. That's great for having a little more go than 1st to 4th. My .02
I do the same, especially when going downhill or after accelerating briskly uphill. However, lately after installing my BPP shifter, I've been purposely shifting more often, primarily because it's so much more fun compared to the "row your boat" feel of the stock shifter.
As far as cruising engine speed, I don't let the tach go below approx. 1500 rpm.
I leave mine in 2nd or 3rd depends on the speed limit. I keep my rpm's up around 3,000 or 3,500 so you if you need to punch the gas it takes off like a raped ape.
