More information for anyone who has the peeling on the passenger side removable top.

Mike Locke has been contacted about my wife's '98 and her friends '97 "glass" top peeling issue and he is looking for more information. If you don't call in, then it becomes an "isolated" incident and nothing happens. If you call and report that you have the SAME THING happening to your car, they they might admit that at least some batches of tops had quality issues, which may lead to a replacement. Mike is apparently a national GM rep that handles complaints.

IOW, the tops that have this problem are defective.

Am I reaching, grasping at straws, or does my argument seem reasonable?
Your argument is reasonable but expecting the General to write a check isn't. Ain't gonna happen.

Default Lexan Peel

The equation is quite simple really - Mega doses of solar radiation (UV) plus Lexan plastic equals the Peel [UV+LX = $1200]

there was a thread more than 6 months ago addressing this issue....namely, the 4" wide strip on the passenger side...on my '98 this occurred after approx. 3 years....the top for my '03 is still in mint condition in it's original bubble wrap

Mine is doing the same on the pass side. I heard it can be replaced under warranty. I haven't had a chance to call and find out if its true.

This is a facinating thread! I have an 01 coupe and my glass top is fine, however, we have had an unusually cold summer so I had my matching (silver) top on for the majority of the time. I noticed in the fall that I was developing a reflection in the paint about three inches from the front that stretched from drivers side to paasengers side and was aout four inches in the middle and tapering down to nothing at the outside. It looked almost like a stretch mark as if the metal was under pressure but it is there if you look carefully while on the car or not. Defect?? Any other experience like this?

The clear top from my 99 still looks like new. I have kept mine waxed, has your top been waxed? If not, that may be the reason the clear coat is peeling. I never had any problems with the top on my 90 either.

What about putting window tint over it before it starts peeling. Would that help?

I have no idea what helps, if anything, and I don't know if calling and reporting the same condition will get anything done. What I do know is our call resulted in the local dealer being called by the national office and arrangements being made to take in our car to look at it. However, they did NOT tell us that it will be covered -- just looked at and documented.

My 2000's top does the same.

Everyone I know with this problem has it happen on the passenger side. It appears to be some form of common manufacturing defect.

My 2000 Coupe (Tinted tops) did the same thing. I traded it for a convertible.
