I need to know the same thing, I just had a set of thin spokes high polished by a friend of mine who owns a factory who polishes wheels for Alcoa and they look terrific. What type of clearcoat should be put on?

Yes, you can clearcoat polished wheels. The Y2K wheels for our cars come from the factory polished with clear on them.

You can use any clearcoat. I personally would suggest a urethane clearcoat. The trick is to clean the wheel really well and leave no polish residue anywhere....

HTH's,

Mark

Aluminum will oxydize pretty quickly if it's not clear coated.

I have machine-finished Z06 wheels on my coupe that are clear coated:

I agree, the wheels can be clearcoated. All factory wheels are done this way. If you don't have the equipment to do it yourself, any body shop should be able to shoot the clear on.

Also, most finishing (anodizing) shops can do it as well. They have specialized dipping tanks and can control thickness a bit better than can a paint shop.
