Default Mod your....automatic

Ok so I am loving my new 2001 C5 and of course the mod bug is huge, and the corvette forum doesn't really save anyone any money in the end!

Anyhow, my C5 is an automatic, as it is my daily driver and all. Of course, I still long to blow the doors off every damn rice rocket that tries to race you every time you stop at a light. So did I kill myself by getting an auto, or can I still eat some rice?

Suggestions for mods on an automatic greatly appreciated

I know the urge to smoke 'em, but the problem with playing with ricers is your car has traction control and active handling while their cars don't have brains in them at all. I've seen them lose control, miss shifts, get sideways, and basically do some of the most stupid things you can imagine trying to beat a Vette - none of which belongs on a public street, and any of which can cause damage to your car or hurt someone else. You may be a great driver and know how to handle your car - but I seriously doubt that kids with coffee-can exhausts know what they're doing. I'd suggest that you save the rubber on your tires for a track where you can really experience what a Corvette can do.

Just my 2 cents.

I recommend getting a decent life insurance policy for 10k.

If you keep stupidly racing idiots on the road at least you won't saddle your family with your funeral costs.

ok i'm going to go against the wind here .. mostly because I live in the real world and understand it goes on.

now assumign you'd be using this on a track...

you'd either have to swap the diff. gearing or take care of some torque management issues.

Not dead at all! Get some 3:42's or 3:90's, a Yank TC, an intake, some LG headers , a good cat back and a LS1 dyno tune and you can eat all the rice you want Actually you can do that the way she sits but the more the merrier Oh and save the racing for the track (official disclaimer )

You can have your cake and eat it too, so to speak..Having an automatic (A4) idoes not place you at a disadvantage anymore. With the parts available today it is pretty much a level playing field. I have a 2001 Coupe A4 with some simple mods, bolt on stuff ie...LG Long tube headers, Blackwing intake, minor tuning air to fuel ratio check, B&B PRT's. My 1320 stats went from 13.25's to 12.79 @ 114 mph, thats with stock 2.73 gears and street tires not Drag Radials. This winter, installed 3.42 gears and Yank 3500 Conveter and Drag Radials, 11's should be within easy reach now, can't wait for the (rice)season to open here in Texas. This is my everyday driver and I figure a mid 11's car ought to surprise alot of kids w/ricers. My car looks completely stock on the outside. It's kinda like having a sawed off shotgun inside of your Tuxcedo jacket. Damn I love this stuff. When the mod bug bites gears and let it breath, ie.... headers and intake and free flowing cat back's biggest bang for the buck and this is only the begining. Then it gets real serious
Just keep the racin stuff on the track, its more fun and there are people to verify the killls.

I have to agree with CAJUNY2KC5 on this one. You're gonna find that every young male out there with anything that'll do 0-60 in under 10 seconds is going to try and goad you into racing. Some will do it just to see how fast YOU can take off.

I've had beater Toyota's, old Hondas, fart-can Nissans, new BMW's, etc.etc. trying to get me to run against them. It's funny when you can spot them 1/4 in back of you as they start to accelerate so that when they finally pass you, they are doing 75 or 80. Of course, we could be at that speed from 60 in a couple of seconds.

In short, leave the racing for the track. What do you have to prove? You've got America's premier sports car and they have their mom's Honda...

for the last and final time .. it's not about proving anything. it's about having fun. That's what i dont understand, why can't most people grasp this concept that the occational red light drop is just for kicks 'n giggles. Obviously this isn't the type of thing that would be done with the presence of young children or any human or animal for that matter.

It's like, ok it's 3am .. nobody is around .. let's roll.

so please stop jumping on the offensive once the word street and race are brought into a conversation.

but as always .. that's my $0.02

and that's enough of me hijacking your thread.

I understand what your saying guy! I live in the real world too! I don't race that much, but I will punch it for 2 to 3 seconds to show what I got and back off! Most people in this forum are older and some are cool about your subject but soem are sarcastic and square! They forgot when they were young and spinning the tires, and now all of a sudden they want to jump on you! We all know there are raods in every city that are the runs spots that everyone gathers around 12:00 and 4:30AM.

Keep it real and be safe though!

...with Cajun', and also the suggestions about life insurance, etc.

It all depends on what kind of thrills you're looking for. For performance thrills, go to the track and scare the hell out of yourself.

For street thrills -- and let's face it, that usually takes the form of putting another driver in their proper place -- here's what works for me with my C5, Magnum RT, bikes, etc.:

1. Pull abreast of the "competition," and catch the driver's eye.
2. Smile, and do this:

3. Smile again, roll out of the throttle, and know that you just stole a punk's favorite toy.

There are plenty of good mods to do to an automatic - headers, new rear gears, torque converter, of course engine upgrades - the list goes on. All you need is some $$$'s and then mod away.

That sounds like the "OOH YEA" package!

And plenty of rice at test and tune night at your local track.....most won't line up against you so you have most runs by yourself.

Why did you buy a Corvette in the first place? There is nothing wrong with a little fun. Just keep it safe. As for drag racing on the streets, I wouldn't do it, that's for the track. But to have a little fun with other cars, what the h***, why not. Why does everyone here mod their cars? I doubt everyone is at the track every weekend.

Start with a better air intake, long tubes, x-pipe and cat back you can do this for 2 to 3K. If you want significant increase in HP go for a pro-charger that will set you back some big change but it is a major increase in HP. and make you a friend to your local speed shop owner.

Oh. I forgot that I'm an old guy, with a wimpy 2000 A4 3.15 who can't remember how to have fun in a car.

And I won't mention beating the younger guys with later year C5 M6s at the Gainesville Raceways dragstrip last year. Or who runs NCCC and SCCA events against other Vettes. Or who has his NCCC certification for high speed road course racing. Sit with me approaching a 90 degree corner at 140 mph on a road course and let's see who moves their feet to brake first. Let's get sideways high speed racing in the rain and see who recovers first (without leaving the track or wetting your pants) and has a better lap time.

I'll take going to another driving school over running all the ricers in the world any day of the week and have twice as much fun learning how to drive better, faster and safer.

Oh crud........I've fallen and can't get up......I'll just drag myself to the car....

You can turn an A4 into a super butt kicking rice burning ****. My A4 has a blackwing, vortech supercharger, camshaft, Stainless Works LT headers and 3" mids with high flow cats, Corsa Pace exahust, Yank SY 3500 torque converter, FLP level 4 tranny, and a 3.73 diff gear. Keep it safe on the roads, but when you need to go, point it straight and hang on for dear life.

Hey Jim, I have an extra cane if you want it. I just got a new one with a big tennis ball on it for extra traction. Us old geezzers have to stick together. You wouldn't be going golfing today would you? It's 7 above here.
