I have driven standard cars a hand full of times. My first time was on an accord and i did very well in my prospective. Learned the clutch feel fast and drove for a few hours on busy streets and highways after only 10 minutes of "learning".
Who learned to drive stick on their Z and would you consider it an easy car to adapt to?
I'm about to go out and test drive some ZO6's and i dont want to seem like a fool....lol Dealers seem to take pride in their ZO6's, one was keeping it at his house because it was such a "supercar".
I'll be honest....my recently purchased 01 Z06 a month ago was my first manual car. I've had auto tranny pony/sports cars prior. So basically,I learned stick in a 400hp car my first time out! hahaha Pretty easy to adapt to....I'll come clean,I did stall the car a few times here and there in stop and go traffic, and when parking(forgot to step on the clutch when stopped) But you learn pretty damn fast cause you don't want to look like a jackass while driving this beast of a car. It's been raining hard here lately,so I am still learning how to launch hard efectively from a stop. Stop and go on steep hills is still a little tough...stalled the other day cause I didn't have enough revs. Live and learn. But with the deep well of low end torque,it's easy to get going and not have to rev the hell out of the car to get moving. Good luck and go for it. If I can do it,anyone can! :o
I test drove an '02 Z last month, and even after not driving a standard since the summer (my Dad's '73 Camaro) I drove it no problem. Well, ok, I did scare the crap out of the sales guy when I did a "lazy" shift into 1st gear, and it didn't quite go, so I had to go for it again and it made a quick little "grind" noise! I don't think that was really my fault though...I was shifting between reverse and 1st, and I think maybe the car was rolling a bit?!
...otherwise, the car drove as easily as a 5-speed Sunfire I used to have. Really made me kick my *** for getting an auto in my Z28.
Yes, this was my first stick! Gee what a find time to learn, like its only one the most powerful American cars ever built. I only stalled it a billon times. Tell you what though; my initial driving for the first 1,500 miles is a testament if how well this car is built, no blown engine or trans. Any other car, they would still be looking for parts. A good friend of mine who races semi-professional guided me on what to do right. Maybe now my clutch (whats left of it) my not need a replacement at 5,000 miles. Obvisiously a warrantee exception.
Hey Good post, pretty interesting on other members stories.
I learned to drive manual on my 03 Z06 and had absolutely no trouble. Well, I did grind it once when showing off for a passenger (how embarassing), and stalled once when nobody was around (is it really a stall if there is nobody there to see it?). I still get beat through the intersection by all the crazy soccer mom's in their SUVs, but am getting better at launching in 1st gear.
Additionally, my wife did not want me to get the Z06 because she did not know how to drive a stick. Well, after about half an hour, she was zipping through the gears like a pro (except for sometimes starting out in 3rd, haha). Now she loves to drive it.
This is either courage or its true love knows no boundies

Hate to say it, but no way would I let her drive it! Hell I gave her my Auto 78 anniversery edition as a bribe, just not to have her ask anymore. Love hurts sometimes.
My first manual was in my first car, a 1965 Pontiac Tempest in 1965. Have had them ever since. I currently own a 4, 5, and 6 speed manual and an auto in my Dodge Diesel dually.
my first was a 4 speed 1969 cougar, haven't drove a stick since i bought the Z. Test drove a Z at the a different dealer from purchase. As we left the lot I stalled, guy just looks at me, at the first light, i stall, guy just looks at me, after taking the first winding turn at about 105, guy stops looking at me and just stares straight ahead, back at dealership, guy thanks me for an interesting drive.
My first car was my first manual transmission. It was a brand new 1969 Dodge Super Bee with the 383 Magnum engine. I was 15 when I got that car.
What kind of Vette are you driving now?
My first stick shift was a 8n Ford tractor when I was 9 years old growing up on my Dads farm. Now I will not own a Vette without a manual trans. Way more fun to drive .
So far I think I've got the oldest or at least one of the more difficult standards that I learned in.. It was my father's 64' chevy half ton pick-up. Three on the tree and no syncros!!

A 2002 Z06. TR with MR interior. Best and fastest car I have ever driven.
Not a vette story, but a ridiculus first stick story...friend of mine at college, you know the one w/ the parents that have $100 bills falling out of their pockets, called me up one day to teach him how to drive the 600Hp Supra TT that he had delievered that day from Maryland to Oxford Ohio, so it was a fun weekend for the both of us, not for the car that I obviously abused. . .
My first fews cars were standards, then i got lazy and got a truck with an auto
I love the feeling of shifting gears to me its part of the experience. Afet a while is very second nature. In college I could eat a breakfast swandwich, drink a large coffee, and smoke a cigarette all while driving a stick into NYC traffic.
I rember it was like juggling , But I never cared if anything spilled etc, after all it was a toyota
