ive head that if you use a slim jim to break into a vette when the stock alarm is armed. it automaticlly defeats the door ajar mechanism and turns the alarm off. does anyone know if this is true and if so is there a way to rewire the door switch so it cant happen?
thanks!
don
eamador11, i like that! lol!
i started this cause it was told to me, but you guys are right.
the slim jim or interior unlock or manual unlock does not turn the alarm off, using the key in the door or the fob does turn it off.
IM WRONG! okay? :-)
i looked at the parts blow up and i wouldnt even be interested in trying the slimjim, on my car...
thanks bob and everyone else!
don, if the car has been locked using the electric lock button or the FOB, and then unlocked using the mechanical door unlock button, such as a slim jim would do, the alarm is NOT defeated, the alarm WILL sound, and the car will NOT start. The ONLY way to then return the car to normal is to unlock the car with the key or the FOB.
Bob
I think that is incorrect. The locking mechanism doesn't 'know' that the key is actually unlocking it or that the key fob locked it. Someone could use a slim jim or in the case of the birth defect who broke into my wifes 2000 Suburban, merely push the metal in slightly below the lock creating a hole that a screwdriver or knife could be inserted and manually push the tab on the locking mechanism to the open position. In either case, the vehicle thinks someone has put the key into the lock and manually unlocked it. Try it sometime with a key. Lock your GM vehicle with the fob. Then put the key in the door and unlock it. Notice no alarm when the door opens. In fact a light comes on to assist you in your actions.

I agree, it's all about how desireable your car is vs how much effort it will take to get it. To be theft-proof you need to drive a junky old POS and put an alarm on it, plus a kill switch plus a pedal/steering lock, then park it next to a vette.
Oh wait, parking junky old POS's next to vettes is a different posting thread, isn't it... ?? Sorry!
