I'm coming home after a year in the desert and then a year in Korea . I have Andy's kit waiting for me but I don't have time to install and tune before I'm off again. I do have time for a set of headers and was wondering if I install a set, how critical is getting it tuned right away? Car is a 2001 Z, minimal mods. Thanks
welcome home and thanks....with headers can get codes, tuning can eliminate codes...for performance tuning after headers it is for A/F adjustment and possibly to add a little timing....if you remove cats when adding headers then considerable more timing can be added. expect 5 to 10 more rwhp from tuning plus elimination of codes.
I have headers without a tune, I recently had the CLB done to my car (without telling me) and they whacked my tune. Car runs 100% fine, I'm sure I lost a horse or two. My check engine light does come on. If you can deal with the light, you'll be fine, I hardly doubt you can hurt the engine with headers and no tune.
Tuning the car after adding headers is not required. If you plan on doing other mods in the near future, I would hold off on the tune until they are completed. After you get the remaining mods done then have the tune done that includes all of your performance mods.

Welcome home. I installed LT headers on my 99 w/o a tune and never threw a code or had any issues. I picked up a solid 25 RWHP and 30 RWTQ. My 99 was running real rich before the LTs. The LT leaned it out to an almost perfect 12.5:1
I'd get a wide-band dyno base line to see how your car is running. Since most C5's run rich LT's a good mechnical way to lean the motor out a tad.
Headers are good. If they are a stock replacement (Shorties) then there will be absolutely no issues or problems. Tuning is optional but is not critical.
Im saving for my set right now.
