If you're talking about the column lock recall it is quite possible that this behaviour is a direct result of having it done.

Please check for any codes in the DIC and post the results. After you write down the codes, errase what is storred in memory. I had a 98 and it was doing the samething. My problems were caused by a BAD Throttle Actuation Control module (TAC) and dirty chassis grounds.

Lets check and anylize the codes first. The next time this happens, pull up the codes on the DIC and reset any PCM codes that pop up. I found out that if I cleared the PCM code, the car would run correctly again. That is a SURE sign that the TAC module is at fault.
Here is how to check the codes:

Let me know if I can help. I have a forum post on chassis ground cleaning, take a look and maybe you can check yours out.

Dirty Chassis Grounds are starting to show up more and more, especially on cars that are drivers!

time to go back to the dealership .. this is a limp mode that the car goes into whenever something bad happens. I believe an overheat (off the top of my head) causes this also .. could be nothing, could be something .. eitherway i'd blaim it on the dealer.

That code is a HVAC System, Left Actuator Feedback Short to ground.

Shorts in a C5 electrical system can cause all sorts of crazy problems!

Something else to check! Take a look in your drivers foot well, behind the toe board. See if that area is wet or damp. Feel the carpet and the jute underlayment and see if it is damp! If the BCM get wet, It can also cause the car to FREAK out!!!
