Default Oil Change question?

Just a quich question. How long mile or length wise do you wait from oil change to oil change?. I did mine after 3,000. Only 3,500 on it now but I heard you should wait more along the lines of 5,000 with the synthetic oil.

Thanks in advance

You don't have to do it until the computer says to or once a year which ever is shorter. Definatley no more than every 6000 miles according to jiffy lube with mobil one synthetic oil.

Typically - I follow my DIC! When it's gets to around 35% oil life left, I change the oil, which for me is about 4K miles.

I also wait until my DIC says about 50-45% life left on the oil.

There was just a big thread about this recently. Seems that you should trust the Oil Life Monitor on the DIC, and not just change at ~35% - 45%.

I change my oil once a year or at 5,000 miles, whichever comes first.

First, welcome to the Forum.

The following thread on this same subject just went around a few days ago. Evil-Twin is a retired GM engineer who is very knowledgeable in this area and you may want to pay particular attention to what he has to say on this subject in this thread:

I normally do mine at 5,000 unless I've done some "spirited" driving.

Thanks all. I've read about 200 post I can't believe I missed that one. Great info in this post and that one. I think since GM did all the testing that Evil stated I will use the DIC unit and go by it. I just can't believe all this car can do. I read the owners manual and I'm still learing more from just reading post.

Thanks all..

This is a great place for learning

Default Oil Change

I change my Vet at 6000 and the Mercedes which uses Mobile 1 at 12,000. The data I have found indicates that M1 is effective until about 12,000 miles. Then the particulate matter begins to increase. Changing the oil filter and adding a qt at 12K miles will return the oil to acceptable for another 6000 miles. The data indicated not to go beyond 18,000 due to viscosity changes in the oil.

The GM reco, for my 99 is 7500 miles, I believe the 04 C5 is 12,000 miles. I think you probably will spend a lot $$ by changine too early. But just my $.02 worth. Besides my full time job is to wear out my C5 so I can buy a C6. Currently my C5 has 60K on it and oil consumption is impreceptable at 6000 miles. Engine and car is great. Jim

Mine doesnt get driven all the time, so I change it 1 time a year. I just changed it this past weekend. In the 1 year, I had 2,155 miles since the last change a year ago.

If I did put more miles on it, I would go via the DIC and change it in the 25-30% range probably.

I change my oil when the oil life monitor reads about 40-45% life remaining. That comes out to about every 4500 miles.

I use Mobile 1 in all our cars and change if myself. Mercedes Benz says Mobile 1 can go 10,000 miles between changes. I say 7,500 or one year. Most manufacturers agree that conventional oil, which is about half synthetic, can easily go 5,000 miles between changes. If you can see through the oil to your dipstick, you have some life remaining. If you can't see through the oil on the dipstick, change it immediately.

Mobile One.... 10,000 miles per change. That is with mixed City, Highway, and racing. Pushing 60,000 miles with no problems.

For some reason, lots of Vette owners beleive their Vette is not as good as many other cars on the streets and are afraid to let the oil run it's life course... I find this very strange.

Oh well, you trust your car or you don't. Many other auto manufactures with cars using Mobile One recommend oil changes from 10,000 to 15,000 miles. So 10,000 on the low end of the scale is fine
