Default "Pop" radar?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone know if Alabama uses "Pop" radar? What about adjoining states. I'm thinking about updating my V1. Valentine said I shouldn't upgrade unless it's in use around here. I've read that having the "pop" upgrade can result in more false alarms. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm not even familiar with the term ... but as you know, they're pretty aggressive around here so they probably have it.

BTW, hello Neighbor! You're the closest forum member to me that I've seen so far.

If you come north, some of the Tennessee troopers have it....also laser. Most of their cars just have the instant-on. I'm gonna have to upgrade......

Hi Rocketdawg, good looking spiral gray coupe. Any events around let me know. "Pop" radar is a relative new radar that is turned on and back off in less than a second, not much time to detect. The Valentine radar detector can be upgraded to detect this. For more information go to "valentine1.com". I'm a little hesitant to upgrade because it can cause more false alarms and there is no need if it is not used aroung here.

My RX 65 Pro detector came with "Pop" detection, you must have an antique.

POP is a low oscilating form of radar produced by the MPH brand radar gun. It is very nasty, so nasty that if it used on stand-by mode, MPH reccomends Police officers not use it to give citations (too many false readings) as explained in the MPH radar gun's instruction manual. But if the speeder does not question the method of detection, whose to say the police officer could not give you a citation from a false reading. Always question POP and always contest a POP ticket using MPH own service manual as your evidence. WWW.Valentineone.com tells exactly in the manual where it is stated for Police agencies not to use this method of detection.

i think Radar detectors are a waste of money. With all the high tech equipment the cops have, the only thing that the detector is going to tell you is that you just got busted. i have a Bell 980 and i feel that none of them will work against POP,Lazer, instant on,being paced with an unmarked, or low profile car, or Vascar. I use cruise control constantly to keep me out of trouble and if i counted all the times that i've got "zapped", had i been speeding i wouldn''t have a license.

My POP works in TN. From my understanding, when they POP you, they get your speed, but have to hit you with regular radar for the citation.
A radar detector is only one of the many tools you can use to avoid a ticket.
One is to watch the truckers.
Another is to always let someone get ahead of you. Someone always wants to pass a Vette...let 'em. Keep them about a half mile in front, and if the officer uses instant on, you will get a short beep, you have time to hit the brakes, the guy in front doesn't.

Another way to say it is: Situational awareness and use a rabbit.

GMDGary, I've never heard of a RX 65 Pro, if you think my Valentine is an antique then yours must be straight from a garage sale. Trying to get an honest answer and someone has to be a wise guy. Thanks to all who gave good replies and all additional comments appreciated.

Thanks Seamoore. There's something going on this weekend but I'm not sure what. And ... there's a couple of Corvette Clubs here in Huntsville that I'm going to check out. Perhaps you'd like to do the same.

All good to know. It's the first time I've heard of "Pop" radar. But I am glad to hear it's not recomended for use to issue a citation.

Got my V1 in Dec with POP. Doesn't matter what you have if you're the first in line and speeding. Then what you need is VERY quick reaction time to hit the brake. Following the rabbit is by far the best thing to do when possible.

To answer your question, yes Alabama uses "Pop" radar, my Escort tells me so. They will "POP" you & if you are going fast enough they will hit you with regular "k" or "x" band radar. They also have laser.

I've been on a few runs, and we put the cars with the Valentine and Escorts (radar detectors, not the other kind) as bookends. Sold me on the Valentine, mine should be here any day now.
That and some common sense...

Unless you have a new V1 or just recently sent it in for an upgrade, the Bel RX65 Pro outperforms the older and newer V1. I just purchased one and it really is a nice detector. The older V1's are out dated but still are capable of saving you a few bucks...The Bel RX65 Pro, Escort 8500 X50 and new V1's are incredible compared to detectors from only a few years ago...
