How hard is it to remove the liner. I see the plastic "tabs", but I question if they will hold up when I pullthem out. Do I need to get new tabs or is there a tried and tested safe way to remove them without damage?

Very easy to remove first put a big cloth or sheet to cover the engine so you dont lost any when you pull them out, then just use your hand to pull them up alittle and then just twist them little by little while you pull them out. They wont break and you can reuse them.

Purchase a "Door Plug Puller" at a auto supply store for about $5.99.
You can purchase a set of 3 replacement plugs there also for about $1.99.
You can use these plugs over and over and over again, until the threads are bare. Mine have been on and off about 50 times so far and are still working well. For some unknown reason, I always seem to drop one into "never-never" land, and believe me, they never fall to the ground.. Always good to keep a few extras on hand..
I found the best way to pull them without hurting your fingers is to use a claw hammer. Pops them out just like pulling nails.
put the head of the hammer in your hand them insert the claw under the clip. With your hand between the liner and the hammer use the other hand to pry the clip out. This way you don't mess up the liner with the hammer. My .02
