Default Blackwing Vs Vortex Rammer System

This is going to be my first performance mod to my 2004 C5. Which one do you think is better and why?

What other mods do your recommend? I have the 2.73 gear...

Thank you for your help

I bought the Blackwing because it seemed to get rave reviews on here and I didn't have to "modify" anything to install it. I believe for the rammer install that cutting is required but I am not sure. The blackwing is awesome and not all that expensive considering you only have to clean it. It made some very noticeable gains after installing it. I bought mine used and saved over $100.

I have the blackwing which is far easier to install. Some will claim you get more gain out of the vortex but in my oppion I dont think you would be able to feel the differance in the set of your pants. To get performance if your putting more air in you need to get it out. So your next mod should be your exhaust

You never know when you will want to put the car back exactly the way it was, (think warrenty work and dealers that may not honor if any mod is installed) so the
Blackwing is no cutting, do drilling, and about 10 mins. to turnaround. Be sure to keep all your original parts and fasteners; place in small plastic bags; label EVERYTHING (memories fade) and don't forget where you put them. Blackwing works for me!

I have the Vortex and like it a lot. Bought it from a forum member includung his precut shroud and oiling kit and shipping for $190 (I think). You will like either one though I seem to have read more negative comments on the Blackwing caused by hydro lock. Good luck.

Vortex will make more power b/c it only draws cold air from outside the engine compartment. The Blackwing is easier to install but the Vortex isn't hard at all.

As for hydrolock... the Vortex filter is still 14" off the ground so you have to submerge the front end to have any problems... jsut don't drive through a huge pudde. I've had mine on for two years w/ one year as a DD w/o any problems.

If I had to do it all over again it'd be a Halltech TRAP or the Vortex. I like the Vararam but since I track my car I need that cool air flowing over the motor and the vararam blocks that.

I had the blackwing on my last vette, and again on this one. I switched to the TRAP, and it is noticeably better than the BW.

If you're not concerned with the additional install work, I'd go with the Vortex, as it, like the TRAP, breathes colder air.

I had the Vortex and I hydrolocked my LS1 while using it. The front black lower air dam can act like a scoop to push water up into the Vortex air filter when encountering water filled dips at intersections. I have a new motor and a Blackwing now.
