Default TCS Codes & Reduced Engine Power

I was driving yesterday and got to the local car show when all of a sudden the car wouldn't move anymore when I was in gear. That's when the reduced engine power message came on with the check engine light. Car was running rough like it wasn't on all 8 cyclinders. After turning the car off and on a couple times I finally got the car to move so I can park it and check the codes. Here are the codes that I found. 10-PCM P 1518 H (PCM to TAC Module Serial Data Circuit) 28 - TCS C1278 H (TCS Temporarily Inhibited by PCM) C1281 H (Steering Sensor Uncorrelated Malfunction) C1286 H C (Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction) & C1288 H which I can't find at all on the DIC code list. Well after checking the codes and letting the car sit, I started the car and had no more check engine light. I drove the car home and the check engine light never came on and car had full engine power, everything was back to normal. Looking to find out if anyone has had this happen and what the problem was. Was this some fluke thing or is a TCS part or sensor starting to go? I had plans to go to the track today, but having second thoughts now.

Same thing happen to me last october. I let it sit for 10 minutes, started it up and it ran fine. no check engine light or anything. Never had the problem again. knock on wood

Well, mine doesn't sound all that different in that it acts up and then goes away for a while. Have you experienced any more of those problems? I'm trying to figure out my issues below.

OK, it all started out with what felt like a TPS problem. From idle or off-idle she would stumble or do nothing at all and suddenly send the tires up in a blaze of smoke. A couple days later she started sputtering and missing badly. Then, for no apparent reason she would straiten up and run like a champ.

I found several articles on the forum about ground wire corrosion which helped quite a bit, thank you to those guys. But she's still acting up and throwing codes. Below are several days worth of codes. After recording these I cleared them.

While checking and cleaning connections I unplugged the main computer as well as the one below the carpet on the passenger floorboard. After reconnecting everything including the batter it wouldn't crank at all. I eventually disconnected the harnesses from the computer under the passenger floorboard and it finally would crank and start. I drove her for a few days but when I parked her yesterday she went back to that computer thing where she won't crank at all.

Idea's?
She's dead right now and I'm getting the itch.

I've had that sort of thing happen like twice over the years. On both occasions it appeared to be battery voltage/connection issues. One instance was the classic A/C condensation in the floorboard. That's the problem with codes, when they come in bunches like that it's often a symptom of something else.

i had a similar issue with my 99 vert that i attribute to low voltage. kinda long so bear with me . . . .

car died on my wife about 30 minutes from the house, i drive out and she said she had stopped to get gas and after, the car wouldnt start, it was completely dead. no lights, beeps, blinks, nothing electrical. i checked the battery and it looked ok at a glance. serpentine belt was ok, alternator looked ok. i got my tools out and as soon as i put my wrench on the positive terminal on the battery, the post popped out. ah ha, makes sense.

so i get a guy to give me a jump, and once the car is started, i figure i just drive home, or to advance auto, and get a battery. well, 2 minutes after i left the gas station, it started to rain. wipers on, ok. headlights on, and it took a shet. lights flickering, check engine light, codes, etc. reduced engine power comes up on the dic and the car is running like shet, and i cannot keep at speed. i pull over, have a zillion codes, and i start clearing them trying to get it out of reduced power mode. i couldnt so i had to shut it off.

back at the house, hours later, i put a new battery in, and it was all better. for me, reduced power came from the low voltage. at least thats what i think.

Yeah, the first thing I did was clean up the corroded grounds. They were all ugly as I found elsewhere on the forum. Then second thing was replace the battery. Mine checked OK, but I replaced it with an Ultima anyway. Still had problems. We also found bad connections on the relay that hangs over the BCM so we fixed that. That allowed it to start consistently but the computer still had problems. I took it to a specialist and he noted a bad PCM and a bad ECM. I got a new PCM and he's working on a source for the BCM. Not bad considering the car has 36,800 miles on it and is in excellent cospmetic condition. Oh well, what do you do?

I had a the same thing happen three times. Once the codes were cleared full power was restored. It always happened during WOT transients to decel at the upper RPM range. I'll have to look into the bcm connector and grounds.

I think there is info under bad BCM in here somewhere leading to C1278.

Hi Jay did you ever figure out what was the problem, I'm taking my 98 vet in because engine light stay on but according to the DIC I have the same codes as you. I just want to have a little information before I talk to Mech Thanks Jim

These cars are very voltage sensitive---I would guess that most of your codes are FALSE CODES either to a drop in voltage or a voltage spike----I wouldn't panic 1st delete all the codes and see if they re-appear
