Default Engine ping

Here I go again...
My 1997 A4 has, a 224/224 567/.567 lift and the LSA is 114.
Patriot heads P/P with a mill to 62cc chambers.

My tuner has installed new..new plugs, replaced the Air Temp Sensor in the air bridge. And the "ping" is still there.
The only way he can get the knock out is to lower the timimg to 16, but this loses a hugh amount of hourse power.

His next step is to replace the PCM..because each time he over writes it, the PCM locks up.
So he is at ends wit as to what else to do to get the ping out so he can tune it properly.
The ping was there before he removed and installed the new heads.

I even mentioned using Sea Foam to clean the carbon out. The heads are new..and he cleaned the tops of the pistons

He is using HP tuning software...

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for any input..

Might be crappy knock sensors. You could look into using the settings from a newer '99+ C5 and maybe swapping out the knock sensors for some newer ones.

Forgot to mention that the knock sensors were replaced when the new heads were installed. The tuner did install a '98 program

Changed the PCM and the problem is solved. Also replaced the battery, so one of the two solved the problem.

You have a O2 sensor wire burnt by the header..I believe it would be a problem.
Depending on the year of your car..the VIN# is assigned to the PCM..I think they stopped this in 2000.
My PCM was purchased at the dealership $200+and the dealership had to re-flash it with a stock tune $150.00.
Check out replacing the air temp sensor in the airbridge..if it is bad it will cause the engine ping. If that's not the fix run a can of Sea Foam through the vaccum line coming from the brake boster and let the car set overnight and then drive it until all the smoke is gone.
I wouldn't waste money on a hand held tuner..take it to be dyno or street tuned.
Yes reving to high RPMs will case the headers to turn red.
